I tasted the 2024 Chardonnay Belle Côte from tank just before it was due to be bottled. It comes from the oldest Chardonnay vines at Peter Michael’s Knights Valley Ranch, planted in 1990. Its aromas blossom slowly, segueing from flint and hazelnut to vanilla, panna cotta, papaya and elderflower perfume. The full-bodied palate has a silky texture and pure, expressive flavors, and its new oak is already very well integrated. It’s balanced by bright acidity and has a long, nuanced finish.
Chardonnay Ma Belle-Fille 2017 will be delicious this Saturday night and every other for the next 10-15 years.
Sir Peter’s ‘Belle Cote’ Chardonnay is on a very short list of the best white wines in all of America. Naturally, it’s also one of the hardest to get. I managed to get exactly one six-pack of this home-run Chardonnay and sometimes I can’t even get that.
The single vineyard, ‘Belle Cote’ or ‘Beautiful slope’ comes from a steep parcel on the Peter Michael estate wisely positioned at 1,700 to 1,800 feet. This gorgeous vineyard is surrounded by native trees which shelter the vines from the hot afternoon sun. This does incredible things to the grapes here: it allows them to mature at a far slower and healthier pace than some of its Napa rivals. The vines work hard here and yield very little wine but what is coaxed from these tiny grapes is some of most compelling Chardonnays in the world year in and year out.
