Penfolds Max’s Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia 2022

Categories , , Tag

Penfolds is globally synonymous with unrivaled Australian quality and innovation, built upon a winemaking philosophy that prioritizes blending across vineyards and regions to achieve a consistent house style. Their Max’s Cabernet Sauvignon is always one best values, but in 2022, it’s a home-run that is a perfect fit for BBQ, pizza night or even dessert. Wine Enthusiast raved calling out a “powerful palate” that they wrote was “cinched by chiseled tannins.” This is a big, brooding wine, but super approachable and enjoyable all the same.

This inky-hued Cab-Shiraz blend is a broody bottling, with a savory, black olive and dusty library-book note to the raspberry and blackcherry fruit. There’s a minty, earthy nuance too, plus a subtle polish of mealy, chocolatey oak. The powerful palate is densely packed with dark fruit and spice, cinched by chiseled tannins. While intended as Penfolds’s more approachable range, this vintage is a big, chewy one.

Penfolds is a renowned Australian winery with a rich history dating back to 1844. They are without a doubt, Australia’s most famous and well-respected winery. They’re widely recognized as a pioneer in the development of modern Australian fine wine. The release of Grange in 1951 was a landmark moment, transforming the landscape of Australian winemaking forever away from bulk and into the world of premium fine wine.

They’re lead by superstar winemaker Peter Gago who has been instrumental in elevating Penfolds’ global reputation. His passion and expertise have contributed significantly to the winery’s success. Penfolds gained significant recognition in the US market when the 1990 Grange was awarded “Wine of the Year” by Wine Spectator. Ever since then, they’ve been one the top dog in the U.S. with no one coming close.
