Paul Hobbs Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma 2019

93 Points, James Suckling

Paul’s 2019 Sonoma Cabernet is a shining example of what happens when one of the world’s top winemakers turns his attention to creating an accessible, everyday luxury. It carries all the hallmarks of a classic Paul Hobbs wine – depth, complexity, and impeccable balance – but at a price point that belies its pedigree.

Paul’s 2019 Crossbarn Cabernet Sauvignon is just hitting its prime now and should be an absolute joy to drink for the next five years. It boasts generous red and black fruits with notes of crème de cassis, baking spices, and sweet oak. What I love here is that Paul rounded this out with other Bordeaux varietals, including Cab Franc from nearby Moon Mountain, to make it more elegant and supple. For the money, it’s a total shooting star.

A berry and cherry red with brightness and elegance. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a long, linear finish. Blackcurrants and chocolate. Some pinecones, too. Lots of finesse and savoriness.

Crossbarn is the project Paul Hobbs started to honor his family’s farming legacy. It is a great project and a Nicholas Wines favorite whenever we can get our hands on it, which isn’t all that often.

Crossbarn strives to craft wines that capture the truest expressions of the Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County, and Napa Valley appellations. By sustainably nurturing each vineyard and using minimalist winemaking techniques, Crossbarn is a reflection of the ideals of farm life and having a deep sense of respect for family, a love of the land, and the joy of collaborative effort.

This is one of the most decorated winemakers in California’s history, completely in his element, serving up unmatched value in Sonoma County.
