Paul Hobbs Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Fortunate for him and everyone, Paul Hobbs loved the sugar and alcohol level of the Cabernet Sauvignon fruit in his Dr. Crane blocks in early September and picked all of the grapes in the middle of the month before the 2nd and more impactful fire of 2020. As a result, this wine not only shows no sign of smoke taint at all, but it is easily one of the very best wines made in the U.S. in what was largely a difficult vintage. I had the wine a few weeks back at Barrel & Roost. It is utterly phenomenal. That is not an exaggeration at all. There isn’t one harsh note – it’s a compacted, deeply concentrated, intricate Cabernet Sauvignon that is every bit its show-stopping self. Points are dumb – don’t listen to them!

95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
“One of the finest wines I was able to taste in the vintage is the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard, a deep, inky-hued 2020 with lots of black and blue fruits as well as Graves-like scorched earth, tobacco, and smoked herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated, and opulent, it has ripe tannins, a round, mouth-filling texture, and outstanding length. It’s going to evolve for 15 years.”

94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Picked on September 23, the 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard matured in 85% new French oak. It’s medium to full-bodied, with bright cherries framed by cedar. Slightly coarse and open-knit in texture, with a grainy mouthfeel, it finishes a bit tart. To be fair, these are quibbles in the context of the vintage, which only suffers when compared to the several preceding years; it’s still an excellent wine.”

One of the all-time greatest collectors bottles I’ve been able to offer up. A 100-pointer, don’t miss.

Pioneering winemaker Paul Hobbs established his namesake winery in 1991 with the vision and dedication to sustainably craft wines with minimal intervention and meticulous care to capture the purist concept of place. These are super famous wines that showcase the individuality of new and historical sites in Napa Valley and Sonoma County and they have always been big hits with the Nicholas Wines crowd.

Of course these incredibly cellar-worthy collectors items are expensive, but Paul Hobbs explained to Parker’s Wine Advocate exactly why that is, “Because I got in early,” Hobbs said, “most of what we get is the heart of Andy’s properties—at least two rows from the boundaries and avenues. We are the most expensive because of that.”

Grown on the west side of St. Helena, this distinctive Cabernet shows off characteristics of the uber-famous vineyard from which it was plucked from with striking, deep dark fruit and sophisticated aromas of cacao bean, crème de cassis, and sweet tobacco on the nose. Napa pioneer Dr. George Belden Crane originally planted Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard in 1858. Ever since the 1990’s it’s been considered by most to be one of the very best Cabernet vineyard sites in the world.

Making things even better for Paul Hobbs lovers – Andy Beckstoffer is a close friend of Pauls and lets him choose his blocks before any other contract. That’s why this tastes like perfection!
