Occidental Pinot Noir Bodega Ridge Vineyard 2023

98 Points, Vinous – 96+ Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

“The 2023 Pinot Noir Bodega Ridge Vineyard marries fruit density with energy. Tiny berries in this section of the vineyard yield a dark, dense Pinot. Black cherry, plum, licorice, incense and dark spice add to an impression of somber gravitas. The Bodega Ridge has the broadest shoulders of the four estate wines in this range. It is also one of the most reticent wines in the lineup. Brisk acids and beams of tannin really explode on the back end. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2023 has a ton to offer for those who can wait.”

96+ Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2023 Pinot Noir Bodega Ridge Vineyard is powerful and pretty. It has a medium ruby-purple color and unfurls dramatically on the nose: initial wafts of damp earth, mushroom and conifer give way to intense layers of red and black cherry, plum and pomegranate. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated yet elegant, flooding the mouth with layers of crunchy red and blue fruit. Its tannins are refined and lacy, its vibrant acidity adds tension, and it has a very long, dynamic finish. It should be very long lived in the cellar.

Occidental is Steve Kistler’s beloved Pinot Noir project that he’s always dreamed about starting. It’s a place with a singular focus – to make world-class pinot noir from unique sites on the coastal headlands in the Freestone-Occidental area of the Sonoma Coast. Like the wines of Flowers and Paul Hobbs, this is the West Sonoma Coast on full display and representing some of the greatest bottlings in the world.

Last year, his Freestone bottling was Wine Spectator’s #2 Wine of the Year last year(!) in their annual Top 100 and also received a 98-point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.  Steve Kistler, the magician puts his magical touch with this Occidental wines – giving so much expression and pure beauty to these wines. They’re elegant and structured and about the finest examples of American Pinot Noir that we have.
