Nervi-Conterno Gattinara Molsino 2020

97 Points, Vinous – 95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck

Roberto Conterno doesn’t do anything by halves. He completely overhauled Nervi’s operations, meticulously crafting wines for years before even considering putting the Conterno name on the label. We’re talking Thomas Keller-level obsession here – Roberto is so particular he even had his own stemware made because nothing on the market met his exacting standards.

The Molsino is Nervi’s top single-vineyard bottling, made only in the very best vintages from one of Gattinara’s most celebrated crus. In 2020, it outpointed its cru sibling Valferana, solidifying its spot as arguably the best Nebbiolo of the vintage. Vinous awarded it 97 points, calling it “a dark, brooding Gattinara that’s built for the long haul” – “deep and beguiling” with serious aging potential to boot.

Original price was: $175.00.Current price is: $145.00.

97 Points, Vinous
The 2020 Gattinara Molsino is a dark, brooding Gattinara. Black cherry, plum, licorice, crushed rocks, lavender and spice all race across the palate. A wine of somber intensity, the 2020 is built for the long haul. Deep and beguiling, firm tannins enshroud the long, building finish.

95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
The 2020 Gattinara Molsino initially seems incredibly fresh and minty, presenting a more angular profile, with rocky notes of iron-rich earth. Offering both ripe tannins and ripe structure, it feels elegant but has a more rigid backbone. That being said, it’s going to take time to soften, but it’s worth cellaring for those with the patience to do so.

We’re hanging on by a thread here while Nervi-Conterno Gattinaras remain at least within this stratosphere in terms of pricing. It’s hard to not imagine this will continue to spike the way all Nebbiolo made by Roberto Conterno does. Yes, that Conterno – one of the most revered producers not just in Piedmont or Italy, but in the entire wine world.

Let me put this in perspective. Roberto’s top Barolo, the mythical Monfortino, commands $1,900 per bottle. It’s so exclusive he hasn’t released one since the 2015 vintage. But in 2018, this perfectionist winemaker set his sights on Gattinara, acquiring Nervi – the oldest continuously operating winery in the region and one of the largest growers of Nebbiolo.
