Mt. Brave Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

2024 Winemaker of the Year Winner, Chris Carpenter (VinExpo Paris 2025)

97 Pts, Decanter – 96 Pts, James Suckling – 97 Pts, Jeb Dunnuck

This is actually the only Cabernet Sauvignon that Chris Carpenter makes in Napa that isn’t 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, because he just loves so much of what’s planted nearby. The 2019 blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, rounded out with tiny percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and even a touch of Malbec.

Decanter nailed it with 97 points calling it “A classic Mount Veeder wine… huge, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon.” Suckling labeled it “Classy and authentic. Beautiful now, but will age beautifully.” Jeb Dunnuck wrote that it “does everything right”. And the best part?!? These guys haven’t even tried this one recently. I had it last week at the restaurant and it shows like a dream. A Saturday nighter that is ready to put on a show today, but with still probably another decade and a half of life ahead of it.

Original price was: $125.00.Current price is: $90.00.

97 Points, Decanter
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic Mount Veeder wine loaded with strong savory and mineral accents. Black fruit, graphite menthol and licorice lend complexity to this huge, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. The tannins are pretty fierce at this stage, so readers should plan on being patient.

96 Points, James Suckling
Blackberries and black currants with grape skin, lead pencil and pine cone. Full-bodied with round tannins and juicy fruit. Tamed tannins. Bright finish. Classy and authentic. Beautiful now, but will age beautifully.

95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, and tobacco notes dominate the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, a beautiful, classic, medium to full-bodied, incredibly satisfying Cabernet that does everything right. Drink this complex, perfumed, elegant beauty over the coming two decades. The blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, aged in 81% new French oak.

Mt. Brave’s vineyards sit at a staggering 1,400-1,800 feet elevation on Mt. Veeder, where thin, rocky soils and steep slopes create an incredibly challenging growing environment. The vines sit above the fog line, bathing in morning sunlight while cool mountain air preserves acidity. This struggle produces tiny berries with extraordinary concentration and complexity.

The winemaking is equally meticulous – hand-harvested during cool morning hours, followed by native malolactic fermentation in barrels (94% new French oak) and 20 months of aging. The result is a masterpiece of precision and power – a wine that delivers Carpenter’s signature balance of concentrated cassis fruit, velvety texture, and complex tobacco and graphite nuances with delicate precision and decades of ageability.
