This one today is super interesting and much less common than you think. This baby from Sancerre is not a Sauvignon Blanc, but rather a Pinot Noir. While Sancerre is predominantly known for its white wines, there’s a small but loyal population that still makes incredible red wines as a labor of love.

Les Carrières de Mézy is a small but mighty producer in the Loire primarily known for their Sauvignon Blanc, but their Pinot Noir is a treasure for all those in the know.

Their philosophy centers on showcasing the purity and minerality that Sancerre’s soils, particularly its famous flint (silex), impart to the grapes. They work with vineyards that often include older vines (up to 50 years of age), which contribute to greater concentration and complexity in the wines.
