Mount Veeder Winery is a beautiful, must-visit estate with three vineyards carved high in the hillsides of the Mayacamas Mountains overlooking south Napa. In total, the property stretches over 120 acres, but is mostly forest and brush, with just 47 acres planted to vine.
Their advantage over competitors comes from their unique vineyard altitudes ranging from 1,000–1,600 feet in elevation. Dramatically drawn off steep slopes that offer cool conditions– perfect for slow ripening, which extends the growing season. Mount Veeder is usually the last to harvest in Napa Valley. The result is fruit with highly concentrated flavors – big, bold and brambly. The Reserve Red bottling is their flagship bottling.

2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.

The flagship bottling by the famous Frank Family Vineyards is one to behold in the 2019 vintage. This is tied for the highest this wine has ever been rated, equaling the lofty number from the heralded 2012 vintage. There’s so much to this Cabernet Sauvignon that makes it a very special wine to lay down for the next quarter to half century to come. Wine Advocate noted that it “leaps with vivacious scents of ripe blackberries, crème de cassis and boysenberries, plus nuances of chocolate mint, charcuterie and underbrush.” That’s pretty spot on from my own tasting – plus I’d mention the incredibly silky structure of the wine.
