Montenegro is one of the world’s great Amaros and is one of the more reliable liqueurs you could carry. The nose jumps out at you—sweet and bitter oranges up front, with blood orange and lime fruit that leads, before these beautiful herbaceous notes of mint and thyme that slowly give way to incense and eucalyptus. On the palate it’s soft, silky and perfectly balanced between sweet and bitter. It’s long and elegant with with roasted notes and a mineral, earthy quality that just lingers. This is seriously complex stuff for a bottle at this price.

Amaro Montenegro is an Italian amaro distilled in Bologna, Italy. It is made from a proprietary blend of 40 botanicals including vanilla, orange peels and eucalyptus. This is a historic drink with roots back to the late 1800s. It was renamed Amaro Montenegro in the 1920’s after Princess Elena of Montenegro who ended up becoming the queen of Italy. It’s a spicy, herbaceous drink that has become a staple for home bars everywhere.
