Matanzas Creek Chenin Blanc California 2024

92 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast – 92 Points, Tasting Panel – 91 Points, Vinous

This is a beautiful, high-toned well-perfumed wine from mainly Sonoma with a little Mendocino fruit mixed in. It’s bright and fresh with orchard fruits, floral notes with a beautiful citrus undertone. It’s perfect for a hot day, with mouth-watering salinity.

Wine Enthusiast gave it 92 points and a Best Buy designation, calling it: “Fresh and vibrant, with aromas of citrus peel, white flowers, apple, and notes of green papaya. Flinty on the palate with layers of white peaches, melon, spiced orange, and mouthwatering acidity on the finish.” Vinous came in at 91 points, labeling it as “pure and expressive” and commented that “Though it’s very low alcohol (around 11.5%), there’s a sense of textural generosity that works so well.” This is an electric California white that completely overdelivers for the price.

Original price was: $25.00.Current price is: $21.00.

This winery has been producing grapes since 1977, and the wheelhouse has always been aromatic versions of Sauvignon Blanc. But I was so excited to hear and taste the new project featuring Chenin Blanc. I have long been a fan of the expressions from around the world. This selection is fresh, vibrant, with aromas of citrus peel, white flowers, apple, and notes of green papaya on the nose; the texture and flavors on the palate are flinty with layers of White peaches, melon, spiced orange, and mouth-watering acidity on the finish.

Chenin is exceptional as a variety that can retain acidity in warm climates. This first release from Matanzas Creek shows not only promise but secured success, with restrained but notable floral aromas followed by flavors recalling pear and white melon with a squeeze of fresh lime.

91 Points, Vinous
The 2024 California Chenin Blanc, which comes from sites in both Mendocino and Sonoma, is varietally pure and expressive. Chenin roundness and rich orchard fruit tones join with a chalky, steely sense of tension and a lift of white flowers. Though it’s very low alcohol (around 11.5%), there’s a sense of textural generosity that works so well.

Matanzas Creek has been making wine in Sonoma since 1977. They’re rockstars with Merry Edwards as their founding winemaker and later directed by winemaking legend David Ramey, this Bennett Valley estate has been a Sonoma benchmark for nearly half a century.

Their bread and butter has always been Sauvignon Blanc. But in 2023, they made a bold, climate-conscious decision to unveil something entirely new: a Chenin Blanc. The debut vintage was promising. The 2024 is an absolute standout.
