This winery has been producing grapes since 1977, and the wheelhouse has always been aromatic versions of Sauvignon Blanc. But I was so excited to hear and taste the new project featuring Chenin Blanc. I have long been a fan of the expressions from around the world. This selection is fresh, vibrant, with aromas of citrus peel, white flowers, apple, and notes of green papaya on the nose; the texture and flavors on the palate are flinty with layers of White peaches, melon, spiced orange, and mouth-watering acidity on the finish.

Chenin is exceptional as a variety that can retain acidity in warm climates. This first release from Matanzas Creek shows not only promise but secured success, with restrained but notable floral aromas followed by flavors recalling pear and white melon with a squeeze of fresh lime.

The 2024 California Chenin Blanc, which comes from sites in both Mendocino and Sonoma, is varietally pure and expressive. Chenin roundness and rich orchard fruit tones join with a chalky, steely sense of tension and a lift of white flowers. Though it’s very low alcohol (around 11.5%), there’s a sense of textural generosity that works so well.
