92 Points, James Suckling
“Worth holding your nose to the glass for a while, to eek out the plummy, slightly chocolaty fruit character, together with an interesting, sweaty mineral note that turns to a more herbal trait. Medium-bodied with good intensity and balance and more straightforward fruit flavors. The tannins are sunk into the wine, allowing for a racy, fresh and almost tangy fruit finish. Lots going on here. Drink now.”
Masseria Altemura ‘Sasseo’ Primitivo 2022
92 Points, James Suckling
This is Primitivo (Italian Zinfandel) at its best – plummy dark fruit, hints of dark chocolate, and this fascinating mineral note that keeps you coming back for more. The name “Sasseo” means “stony” in Italian, and fits perfectly here – you can taste the sun-baked stony minerality of Puglia in every sip.
Suckling waxed poetically for this one, encouraging readers to take it all in and savor it. He wrote it’s “Worth holding your nose to the glass for a while, to eek out the plummy, slightly chocolaty fruit character, together with an interesting, sweaty mineral note that turns to a more herbal trait.” This one has a modest price tag, but a whole lot to offer!

MORE INFO
Today’s beauty comes from Masseria Altemura, a fascinating fortified farm dating back to the 4th century BC in Italy’s beloved Puglia region. The property is located in Salento, which is quite literally right smack in the heart of Puglia and in the middle of the winemaking action.
The estate is absolutely magical – picture ancient limestone buildings surrounded by sun-drenched vineyards, with scattered fragments of white stone reflecting light back onto the grapes. There’s even an underground river running beneath the vines! That’s one of the only occurrences in the world.
But it’s what’s in the bottle that really got my attention. This is Primitivo (Italian Zinfandel) at its best – plummy dark fruit, hints of dark chocolate, and this fascinating mineral note that keeps you coming back for more.
