For the Fedriani family and their Marchesato Degli Aleramici – their reputation in Italy is so stinkin’ strong, they never submit their wines for scoring, and most of the American market is unaware of one of Montalcino’s finest – right underneath their noses.
Aleramici wines are enjoyed at seemingly every huge event in Italy. Luciano Pavarotti’s wedding, Milan Fashion Week, Artur-O, the Golden Circle in Monaco, Palazzo della Meridiana, Formula 1 Racing, Genoa Football Team – you name it. Their wines are poured everywhere. They’re very famous throughout Italy.
So despite maintaining a relatively modest American crowd, and their tiny size compared to some of their contemporaries, Marchesato Degli Aleramici remains one of the best producers in all of Montalcino and one that is absolutely worth seeking out.
The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino from Aleramici hits all the right notes. It has a nice medium weight to it with easy drinking cherry, creme de cassis and purple fruits. It’s multi-dimensional with waves of some dark plum and blackberry with more sage and spice components as well that compliment it perfectly.

“Quietly powerful, dense with alluring oak spices and late-picked fruit flavors, this full-bodied, velvet-textured Cabernet-dominant blend is generous and inviting to drink, but also balanced and structured for the long haul. Concentrated, deep and layered, it is meant for drinking with appreciative friends or family in the future. Best from 2027–2040.”
This is rich, opulent, stunning Pinot Noir with a higher pH and a deeper, richer complexion than their Willamette neighbors. It’s a dead ringer for Russian River Valley. Deep red ruby color to the rim with high-toned red berry fruit soaring right out of the glass. It’s incredibly fresh with tremendous depth backed by fine tannins, bright acidity and amazing purity of fruit on the palate. It’s a finessed and elegant Pinot with just intensity and length. At this price, it may be the best Pinot in the country.
As soon as you take the first sip on this one, you can easily see the Burgundian connection. Doglia’s Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato 2022 is medium bodied with scents of fresh cut lavender. On the palate, it’s an absolute delight, full of flavor but with an acid backbone that make it perfect to pair with almost any cuisine. Notes of wild fruits and a touch of pepper are just so good. This is a silky smooth, delicious bottle of wine.
Winemaker Patrick Brunet’s tiny Domaine Robert estate consists of 50-60 year old vines, deeply rooted in the granitic soils of Fleurie. What I love about him is that every vintage brings something new but it consistently stays excellent. For his 2022 cuvee, Patrick produced a concentrated, structured Beaujolais that’s roaring out of the gates but with the bones to improve in the bottle over the next decade. This is always a fantastic bottle to have around.
