Lornano Commendator Enrico Toscana 2020

‘Top Red Wine in Italy’ Winner, Luca Maroni

99 Points, Luca Maroni – 94 Points, James Suckling

It comes from the late legendary winemaker Franco Bernabei who just passed away last week. Franco worked at Felsina, Fontodi, Folonari, you name it making some of the best Super Tuscans, even before it was a recognized category. He’s one of Italy’s highest decorated winemakers. His 2020 Enrico Super T is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese. It’s super intense with a nose that captivates: ripe raspberry right off the bat backed by fresh mint and herbs with more refined spicy notes of cherry, clove and cinnamon. On the palate, elegant tannins finely integrated with bright acidity and herbal notes. Lush, dark, full of depth. Cassis, black cherries, macerated violets. This is a full-bodied beauty that will shine at any special occasion: it’s a powerful blend with velvety tannins and an extraordinarily long and memorable finish. Not to be missed – I just wish there was more to go round!

99 Points, Luca Maroni
The nose captivates with a complex bouquet of ripe fruit, led by vibrant notes of raspberry. Subtle balsamic hints of fresh mint and myrtle add intrigue, while refined spicy accents of turmeric and cinnamon enhance the aromatic profile. On the palate, it reveals an elegant tannic structure seamlessly balanced with refreshing acidity, creating a harmonious experience.

94 Points, James Suckling
A lush and dark wine full of depth, showing cassis, black cherries, macerated violets, wax and oak bark with meaty nuances. Full-bodied, warming and powerful, this has velvety tannins and refreshing lifted acidity. Sangiovese with small amount of cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.

Last week, the wine world was crushed by the news of Franco Bernabei’s passing. We lost one of Italy’s all-time great winemakers. Ever since I saw the news, I’ve been on a scavenger hunt to bring something of his to you. His wines are absolutely sensational. If you haven’t tried one, you owe it to yourself.

Franco’s philosophy was simple: “First the vineyard, then the wine.” Third generation winemaker with decades of family experience in wine. A degree in viticulture and enology. He served as consultant for some of Italy’s most prestigious estates—Folonari, Felsina, Fontodi, Sartori, Guicciardini Strozzi. The man knew what he was doing. More importantly, he respected the land.
