Le Pupille Saffredi Toscana 2021

#46 Wine of the Year (2024 Wine Spectator Top 100)

99 Points, James Suckling – 99 Points, Luca Gardini, 99 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

This is a huge scoring Super Tuscan that is on par with the very best wines made in this region, especially in the 2021 vintage.  Think ‘Aia’s, think Bibi Graetz. It’s an age-worthy wonder that magnificently starts to unfurl all kinds of aromas and hidden layers of black and red fruit that mingle with tea leaves, bramble and mouthwatering savory notes. This is a 40-50 year wine, easily – but already you can show why it’s so highly rated and so coveted amongst Tuscan collectors. It’s a showstopper.

Original price was: $125.00.Current price is: $105.00.

“Mesmerizing aromas of sandalwood, lavender, sage and currants. Mint and spearmint. Lead pencil shavings. Light coffee bean too. Medium to full body with ultra-fine tannins. It goes on for minutes. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, and 10% petit verdot. So approachable already, but this will age beautifully. Best after 2026 and beyond.

99 Points, Luca Gardini
“The symbolic wine of the house, the first to put the winery and the region ‘on the map’. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, nose of small black fruits, notes of laurel, mint and Mediterranean herbs, taut and dense drink, with salty tannins, closes with a fruity and oily return.”

The Fattoria le Pupille 2021 Saffredi is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot that offers seamless integration of dark fruit flavors that bleed directly into spice, Tuscan cigar and earthy iris root. This vintage is compact and firm, especially in terms of mouthfeel, and there are graceful floral tones to close. The winery team has been tweaking the oak regime, landing on 60% to 65% new oak complemented by once-used barrels. They’ve been working in this manner since 2019 to establish sweet and integrated tannins

97 Points, Wine Spectator
This pure, intense red is infused with black currant, blackberry, blueberry and violet aromas and flavors, accented by graphite and wild herbs. Very tightly wound, racy even, with bracing acidity and refined tannins, this classy red leans more to the elegant side, with terrific harmony and length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2045.

Fattoria Le Pupille is an elite Italian winery located in the Maremma region of Tuscany. Founded in the 1970s, the estate has become a symbol of quality and innovation in Italian winemaking.

Under the guidance of Elisabetta Geppetti, Le Pupille has spent the last few decades in a category at the top amongst the very best players. She inherited the winery in 1985 and, with a keen eye for potential, expanded the vineyards and elevated the quality of the wines. A pivotal moment came with the collaboration with the legendary winemaker Giacomo Tachis in the early 1980s, which significantly influenced the winery’s style.

Their international prowess is due in no small part due to its flagship wine, Saffredi, a Bordeaux-style blend that showcases the estate’s commitment to quality and experimentation. With the 2021 vintage, it appears they’ve unlocked some new heights that are particularly note-worthy, even for this fantastic estate.
