La Bastide Saint-Dominique Rasteau La Cabone 2022

94 Points, Forbes Magazine – 93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck

This comes from an exceptional boutique winery in the southern Rhone who is consistently churning out insane values from their Cotes du Rhone to their Rasteau to their Gigondas and more.

Forbes called it “reminiscent of a mellow Fleurie” and Jeb Dunnuck describes it as “Chateauneuf-du-Pape like” and “all about elegance and finesse”. Not bad for a wine at this price!

This 70% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre blend delivers aromas of raspberry, crushed nuts, baking spices, and wild strawberries with a light and bright mid-palate of red fruit backed by crisp acidity. Everything is dialed up to 10 – the precision, the balance, and the purity, with a notable elegance through to the finish.

70/30 Grenache/Mourvedre blend with quiet aromas that include hazelnuts, molasses and wild strawberries. Light and bright mid-palate of red fruit that includes raspberries. Crisp acidity. A dedicated spring wine reminiscent of a mellow Fleurie from Beaujolais. Consider pairing with strawberries. Delightful.

“Châteauneuf-du-Pape-like, with strawberry, flowers, and spice, the 2022 Rasteau La Cabane Rouge is medium to full-bodied, ripe, beautifully textured, and has ultra-fine tannins. All about elegance and finesse, yet still rich, this blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvedre, aged 10-12 months in concrete vats, will evolve nicely for at least a decade.”

La Bastide Saint Dominique is a boutique winery in the south of Rhone Valley known for producing some absolutely exceptional values. Today’s Rasteau should give you a perfect idea of the kinds of magic that this small producer is capable of. It’s comparable to a Vacqueyras or a CDP, but it’s available to us for a lot less than those two would run you.

This isn’t some négociant wine cobbled together from purchased grapes. La Bastide Saint Dominique’s Rasteau La Cabane Rouge comes from their own 7.4-acre vineyard in the appellation, from vines aged between 25 and 45 years planted on red clay soils in the Garrigues de Bolvac lieu-dit. The estate is also in organic conversion, reflecting their commitment to quality and sustainability.
