H.W.C. To Kalon Vineyard Eliza’s Red Napa Valley 2021

98 Points, James Suckling – 96 Points, Wine Spectator

H.W.C. tapped the legendary Andy Erickson (Dalla Valla, Harlin, Screaming Eagle, Staglin) to make their wine and all he’s done is turn out some of the most complex, collector-worthy gems I’ve tasted in a while. This one outpoints a hoard of huge names and big money 2021 Cult Cabernets in the process.

Suckling called it “fresh, structured but rather light on its feet for a full-bodied blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon” in his rave 98-point review. Wine Spectator came in slightly lower at 96 points and advised their readers that even though this wine was still young, when this baby hits its stride, “this will feel really suave.” Both critics agree – this drinks beautifully now but peaks from 2027-2045.

Original price was: $265.00.Current price is: $199.00.

98 Points, James Suckling
Fresh, structured but rather light in feel for a full-bodied blend of 60% cabernet franc and 40% cabernet sauvignon. Good acidity matches moderate tannins in this almost gentle, delicious but age-worthy wine. Red and black fruit, mint and tobacco accents lead to a luxurious, lingering finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

96 Points, Wine Spectator
This red shows lovely range, as sweet tobacco, dried violet and warm paving stone hints all smolder underneath a vivid, pure and polished core of black currant and black cherry puree. Still youthfully taut, as the structure is prominent, this just requires patience to unwind fully. When it does, this will feel really suave. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2027 through 2045.

If you’re To Kalon Vineyard Company, who else are you going to get to run your winemaking department besides a bonafide superstar? That’s why they picked none other than arguably the best domestic Cabernet Sauvignon specialist at this current time, Andy Erickson. We’ve been lucky enough to score Andy’s Leviathan wines, but he’s also been the winemaker at Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Staglin Family Estates, Favia and more as a consultant. Those are where most of his 100-pointers come from!

The vineyard that he gets to work with is absolutely sacred, and the fruit from this vineyard is the most expensive of any in the United States. You would be appalled at the prices they get, but the wait list is infinitely long, so the market for this juice is clearly there.

It was planted by H.W. Crabb back in the 1860’s and he named it ‘To Kalon’ which was greek for ‘highest beauty’. It’s become the stuff of legends with some of the most highly rated and age-worthy Cabernets ever bottled coming off this iconic vineyard. It’s abundantly clear from all the big scores these wines wrack up and the crazy limited amounts that we get, that Andy is only adding to this vineyard’s legacy.
