Günther Steinmetz Riesling Neumagener Rosengartchen Von Den Terrassen 2021

98 Points, James Suckling – 95 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Stunning nose of melon, totally ripe peach and fresh basil with a net-like layer of slate aromas lying over it. This giant wine gives you a very clear idea of how small each of us really is, not only through its staggering concentration, but even more through the exceptional finesse. Breathtakingly long finish. Very limited production. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.”

The 2021 Neumagener Rosengärtchen Riesling “v. d. T.” (previously known as “von der Terrassen”) is very clear, pure, precise and stony on the intense, beautifully slatey and saline nose. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a rich but refined and well-balanced Riesling from 50- to 55-year-old, low-yielding vines. The finish is pure and saline, long and promising, with crunchy slate features and remarkably well-balanced intensity. This will be a great, classic Mosel Riesling in a couple of years.

Günther Steinmetz is a name synonymous with high-quality Mosel Riesling, though the winery’s legacy is now carried forward by the fourth generation, Stefan and his wife Sammie. The estate, located in the village of Brauneberg, has a history spanning over a century, with Stefan’s father, also named Günther, establishing the reputation for quality that the winery holds today.

The Steinmetz family is dedicated to a “natural viticulture” philosophy, which means they avoid the use of herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers. They also carefully control yields and hand-harvest all of their grapes from extremely steep vineyard slopes, a labor-intensive process that ensures the highest quality fruit. This meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard is a key factor in the distinct character of their wines.

In the cellar, their philosophy of minimal intervention is king. The wines are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and are made without any additives. This approach allows the wines to be an authentic reflection of their unique terroir. They make a delicious full-range of Rieslings, from bone-dry to lusciously sweet, all of which are known for their grace, harmony, and mineral expression.
