The 2020 Gomez Cruzado Crizana may very well be the best baseline Rioja of the vintage. It’s a star. It’s a delicious blend of ¾ Tempranillo and ¼ Garnacha that works to perfection. The color is this lovely bright ruby, and when you give it a sniff, you get this floral meets herbs and spices. It’s the kind of wine that makes you want to just sit and appreciate it for a while.
This 2020 is the highest-rated $25 and Under Rioja from Parker’s Wine Advocate for the vintage, no small feat al all. The world’s most respected critic gave this 92 points and called it “truly delicious.”

“The 2020 Crizana is a classical red that is quite impressive for the vintage. It is a bright ruby color and has an expressive nose redolent of flowers, wild herbs, spices and a medium-bodied palate with a fine thread, vine fine tannins and a supple finish. It was produced with a blend of 75% Tempranillo from the Sierra Cantabria and 25% Garnacha from Badaran bottled with 15% alcohol and a pH of 3.65. Truly delicious.”
This gem comes from Gómez Cruzado, a coveted, historic winery (3rd oldest in Rioja) that has been turning heads for decades in the most revered place in all of Rioja, Haro’s Station Quarter. All of Rioja’s elite players are in Haro’s Station Quarter – CVNE, Lopez de Heredia, Gomez Cruzado, La Rioja Alta and Bodegas Muga. They’re all within a few yards of each other and the famous railroads that run through the heart of Alto Rioja. Sandwiched between the Tiron and Ebro rivers, this is where you want to be.
But Gomez Cruzado has proven time and again that they’re not your typical Rioja producer – though they’re working out of a tiny building in the heart of traditional Rioja country, the ideas coming out of there are anything but little!
