Gianpiero Marrone Langhe Nebbiolo 2022
91 Points, James Suckling
“This may not be oaked or powerful or impressive, but it is one of the purest, most soaring expressions of Nebbiolo I’ve tasted.” –Jancis Robinson
This is a sensational young Langhe Nebbiolo with elegance well beyond its pricetag. On the nose, it’s wonderfully fragrant, bursting with rose petal and violet notes that bring you in. This floral elegance is beautifully complemented by bright red fruits like morello cherry and strawberry with a subtle hint of bramble that adds a touch of rustic complexity. The palate confirms the aromatic promise, revealing fine, well-integrated tannins that provide structure without being abrasive, leading to a lovely, persistent finish that encourages another sip.

MORE INFO
Agricola Gian Piero Marrone is a family-run winery with an incredibly rich history, stretching back four generations to Pietro Marrone, who began producing wine over a century ago. Today, it’s Gian Piero, along with his wife Giovanna and their three daughters (Denise, Serena, and Valentina, affectionately known as “Tre Fie” or “Three Daughters”), who passionately carry on the legacy from their base in Annunziata, a sub-region of La Morra, right in the heart of the Barolo production area.
They’re all about making wines that truly express the intense flavors of the Langhe, distinguishing themselves from more commercial styles. Their vineyards are spread across different prime locations, allowing them to cultivate a diverse range of indigenous grapes like Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Arneis, with some vines being impressively old – over 60 years in some cases – contributing to wines of exceptional quality and aging potential.
These vineyards, sitting at a respectable 1300 feet (400 meters) with a southeast exposure, benefit from the unique geological makeup of recent formations, featuring a fascinating mix of calcareous soil with quartz and fine limestone layered with compact gray sandstone. This combination of altitude, aspect, and soil provides an ideal environment for Nebbiolo to ripen slowly and express its nuanced character.
