Unlike some of the other reds on this list, this Touraine rouge is not just delicious easy drinking. It’s more structured, more serious, belying its price. The wine is a blend of côt, as malbec is known in this part of the Loire, cabernet franc and pineau d’Aunis. It’s rich and spicy, the kind of bottle you might choose for a fatty steak, which will help to mellow the tannins. Or you could age it a few years.
Francois Chidaine makes the kind of great wine that Asimov is imploring his readers to seek. How do I know? Because he chose today’s wine to feature in his ‘20 Under $20: Summer Edition”. You can make an argument it’s at the top of his list too. As Asimov puts it, “Unlike some of the other reds on this list, this Touraine rouge is not just delicious easy drinking. If the Chidaine sounds familiar, it’s because he makes extremely noteworthy wines and has been universally adored, aped, and threatened for making wines that are consistently too good.
It was Francois who helped train another Nicholas favorite – Vincent Ricard – who largely followed Francois’s road map of making the best wine possible – no matter what the old villagers thought or how much hard work it would be. “Touraine Rouge is meant as a simple table wine” they would tell him. Chidaine’s Touraine Rouge is firmly in a league of its own.
