I’m not sure you could find anything better than this in terms of sheer value anywhere in Piedmont. This bottling from Fontanabianca continues to amaze me. Barbaresco has always been considered Barolo’s more elegant, silky, and refined sibling. This one is a drop-dead gorgeous, complex, and multi-layered beauty with sweet dark fruit, licorice, and floral components falls into our lap at a price like this. Super highly rated if you’re into points, and incredibly food-friendly, but also one that is so stunning on its own that I wouldn’t blame you for sitting with it in a big glass and bringing out more nuance as you swirl it around.

Original price was: $45.00.Current price is: $37.00.

“Cascading layers of red cherry and damson plum weave through classic rose petal and forest floor, while subtle hints of licorice and warm spice add intrigue. The palate unfolds with graceful power, think silk scarf caught in a breeze. Those classic Barbaresco tannins are present but polished, suggesting a beautiful future ahead. A wine that whispers of old-school charm. Drink Now – 2045.”

The 2022 Barbaresco is a medium red color and offers ripe but somewhat reserved aromatics of raspberries, sweet herbs, tarry earth, and crushed flowers. It is medium-bodied with a good deal of compact ripeness, although it’s well-balanced and pure, with fine tannins that build a bit through the finish, and it closes with a lightly drying sensation. It’s likely not going to be the longest ager, but it has a lot to offer over the next several years. Drink 2025-2035.

You can ask every single winemaker in Piedmont what the most important thing is about an estate and you’ll get the same answer every time: the vineyards. It’s all about the land – it’s about the soil, the sun exposure, the slopes, and ultimately, who has the best vineyards. Fontanabianca is one of those blessed estates that has it all.

These days, it’s run by an ambitious, young winemaker, Matteo Pola, who after taking over from his father has laid out lofty expectations for himself and his family’s incredible plot of land in the village of Neive in the heart of Barbaresco.

With access to the Serraboella and Bordini Crus, their Barbaresco is a rare example in Piedmont of ‘sori’ where the sunlight arrives first early in the morning. Part of the reason for this is the elevation and nearly 300 meteres from sea level. This extraordinary site offers some of the most ideal growing conditions to create elegant, structured Nebbiolo that are as radiant and pretty as you’re going to find.
