Feudo Montoni Nero d’Avola Vrucara 2018

Fabio Sireci farms one of the most beautiful vineyard spots in Italy with amazing views. His Nero D’Avola vines average age is now incredibly 100 years, still magically producing tiny grapes with thick skins that allow for great aromatic complexity. This shows a powerhouse mid-palate of black, spicy fruit and a fine, long finish. As big as it is, the wine is fresh and terrific and has so much life left ahead.

93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
This is Fabio Sireci’s top wine, and it shows consistent quality year after year. The organic Feudo Montoni 2018 Sicilia Nero d’Avola Vrucara (with 5,700 bottles made) is a dark and penetrating expression with sweet cherry and blackberry contrasted against tobacco, smoke and baking spice. It delivers nice softness and textural weight. Fabio is experimenting with some stem inclusion using air-dried clusters. I recently hosted a class on the icon wines of Sicily and was proud to include an older vintage of Vrucara.

93 Points, Vinous
The 2018 Nero d’Avola Vrucara Prephylloxera is hauntingly dark and floral, dusting exotic spice and crushed violets accentuating red plums and balsam herbs. This is a surprisingly lifted and pure interpretation of Vrucara, with silky textures and mineral-tinged wild berry fruits lifted by brisk acidity. A black licorice twang resonates toward the close. Cocoa and balsamic spice hints linger as the 2018 finishes with crunchy tannins and a lovely honeyed sweetness.

As big as it is, the wine is fresh and terrific with Chef Kevin’s Killer Beef Tartar.

This is Feudo Montoni’s top cuvee of organic Nero D’Avola, an ancient variety indigenous to Sicily, comes from the heart of the island, on its mountainous spine between 500 and 700 meters in elevation. The elevation is crucial to escape the south Mediterranean heat with cool nights allowing for a long ripening season.

Fabio’s Nero D’Avola vines now average 100 years in age, magically producing tiny grapes with thick skins that allow for great aromatic complexity. This is such a special Italian Red – it’s a powerhouse mid-palate of black, spicy fruit and a fine, long finish. As big as it is, the wine is fresh and terrific and easily shows another 20-30 years of aging potential.

A big wine that needs something big to go with it. I can think of nothing better than a good Beef tartare appertif.
