Three decades after starting Caymus, Charlie and Chuck would be inducted into Wine Spectator’s ‘Wine Hall of Fame’, earning countless ‘Wine’ and ‘Winery of the Year’ awards from multiple publications along the way. The 100% family-owned operation has flourished into one of America’s most iconic brands, and in true Wagner family tradition, was turned over to the next generation, with Chuck handing over some of the reigns to two of his children, Charlie and Jenny.
Making some of the biggest, boldest wines you can find anywhere, you have to wait in a Black Friday-sized (remember when Black Friday lines were a thing?) line to get your hands on a bottle of their flagship ‘Special Selection’ Cabernet, even when you’re a restaurant owner. Their wine flies off the shelves and has done so long before Forbes Magazine called it “A Wine-Lover’s Favorite Wine”.
But decades long relationships have a way of creating great opportunities, and today is a perfect example of a dinosaur bone being thrown my way. I got a call from an old buddy the Friday after Thanksgiving asking if I had any interest in some Wagner Family wines. I said yes without even asking what it would cost me. Then I was told the price. Now I’m saying ‘Oh, hell yes!”. As always, those savings will be passed down to you, our Nicholas faithful. So here it goes…
2016 Emmolo Napa Valley Merlot
We heard your call for more Merlot and today we’re bringing you one of the best in the US of A. Jenny Wagner, the youngest daughter of Chuck Wagner has watched her dad carefully balance high-alcohol wines that you never seem to taste on the palate. She took over the reins in 2011 and absolutely ran with it, making Emmolo a name of its own. In the 2016 vintage, she delivered a wonderful ode to the Right Bank with a big, lush dark-fruited Merlot. Smooth, well-balanced tannins drive this wine with intricate flavors of black cherries, blueberries, mocha and and violet.

97 Points, Vinous – 96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Ric’s 2019 Cab from the outrageously good vintage in Napa is in my mind nearly perfect. It’s an incredible feat. It’s attached to two super high scores, but that’s not surprising given that Ric is a winemaking legend and has been called, “Napa’s first superstar winemaker.” Antonio Galloni of Vinous gave it a 97 and said the wine “possesses remarkable textural intensity”. Dunnuck chipped in with a 96 and predicted the wine, “should continue drinking brilliantly for another two decades”. Pure class.
100 Points (Bordeaux of the Vintage), Decanter
99 Points, James Suckling – 98 Points (Cellar Selection), Wine Enthusiast – 98 Points, Vinous
Here it is – the perfect 100-point Troplong Mondot. It was one of only 5 wines(!) in the 2020 vintage to receive a perfect score from Decanter – joining the likes of Mouton Rothschild, Petrus, Chateau LC Haut-Brion and Trotanoy as the only 100-pointers. They weren’t alone in their lavish praise for this incredible bottling. Galloni called it “wonderfully exuberant right out the gate” and with “tremendous breadth and power” in his 98-point review. Wine Enthusiast also gave it a 98 with a ‘Cellar Selection’ designate and called the wine, “powerful and dense”.
97 Points (Best in Show), 2020 Decanter Wine Awards
This was the Cab that started it all. A gorgeous bottle that was the first of now 3 straight 97-point award winners from Decanter’s biggest international wine awards show. There are bronze medals, silver, gold and then platinum. Lastly, the true creme de la creme are awarded Best in Show, and that is where you’ll find the 2017 Trefethen Estate Grown Napa Valley Cabernet from the beloved Oak Knoll district. The wine is an absolute show stopper– dark and brooding with aromas of violets, black fruits and figs with notes of black cherry, raspberry, plum and chocolate mousse on the palate. Best price in the country for these Big Bottles.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
