Elia Palazzesi Brunello di Montalcino 2019

94 Points, Wine Enthusiast – 92 Points, James Suckling

Elia transformed his family’s century-old livestock farm into one of Montalcino’s most promising organic operations. They run in similar fashion to Val di Suga, managing just seven hectares in southwestern Montalcino, hand-harvested fruit, and aging their Sangiovese in large Slavonian oak barrels well beyond the legal requirements. This is true artisanal winemaking that honors both terroir and tradition, and in extraordinary vintages like 2019, Elia Palazzesi’s Brunello is a value in a league of its own. Don’t believe me? This was Wine Enthusiast’s only 94-point, under $40 Brunello from the famed 2019 vintage. That should speak volumes.

Original price was: $45.00.Current price is: $36.00.

94 Points, Wine Enthusiast
“The nose balances warmth and tangy salinity, with hibiscus, cranberries, citrus blossoms and crushed stones. The palate brings sweeter fruit notes of cherries, strawberries and orange jam, with firm tannins that preserve balance.”

92 Points, James Suckling
Aromas of black cherries and red flowers followed by a touch of baking spices with toasty undertones. Medium- to full-bodied with fine tannins that last for a long time. Best after 2026.

Elia Palazzesi is a an uber-talented winemaker who was born and raised in Montalcino, Italy. He is best known for producing certified organic wines from his family’s century-old estate. Previously, all of the family’s grapes were sold off or used for family and friend consumption for entertainment. But sensing there was more to the seven-hectare estate, he was the first in his family to decide to start a commercial operation.

Elia’s family has owned their 17-acre (7 hectare) estate for about 100 years. The property was originally a livestock and cereal farm, with vines used only for the family’s personal wine. Elia transitioned the farm to focus entirely on winemaking, with certified organic practices, 100% hand harvesting and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels far longer than the required time periods. All the meticulous hard work and attention-to-detail has been paying off big time for this estate for the past decade plus! These are some of Montalcino’s greatest values.
