Many of the top wines of the Alto Adige actually come from Pinot Grigio’s less popular cousin – Pinot Bianco. I’ve done this a million times – brown bag a bottle of each and taste test blind with your favorite Pinot Grigio drinker. A well-made Bianco wins every time. Once you’ve tasted their light, peachy flavors it’s easy to see why.
Elena Walch is arguably the queen of a region that is not short on amazing winegrowers. She bought and runs the winery with her daughters. It is an entirely woman owned and operated winery.. and they are busy! Each vintage, the trio makes over 30 different wines! Gewurztraminer, Merlot, Pinot Bianco, Muller Thurgau – just to name a few.
And their wines are annually recognized as some of the best white wines in the world. Leading the charge is their flagship white, “Beyond the Clouds” which has garnered 98 point scores three years running and has helped her extend her reach well beyond the tiny Italian town.
93 Points, James Suckling
A pinot bianco with crystal-clear aromas of sliced apples, white flowers and minerals that follow through to a full body with density and structure that delivers freshness and layers at the finish. Flint and other minerals to the attractive fruit at the end. Drink or hold.
This is an extremely versatile wine, delicious as an aperitif as well as an accompaniment for fish and poultry dishes
Les Noisetiers surrounds the Kistler winery on the Sonoma Coast. The 2018 has a classic balance of layered, juicy fruit and mineral backbone. It is delicious wine, with white flowers and stone fruit aromatics leading to a full bodied, juicy core, loaded with flavors of peach, apricots, pineapple and pear. The finish goes a mile long.
The 2019 Frenzy Malborough Sauvignon Blanc is a fabulous value white wine, loaded with green apples, pears and white peaches plus a hint of spice. It’s juicy and fresh, the perfect cocktail hour white. It’s what is referred to as the perfect ‘pool wine’. It’s great paired with just about anything or just enjoyed on its own.
Pied à Terre Sauvignon Blanc 2017 is a savory, fresh, Old-World styled wine, much closer to Sancerre than what is typically found in California. Pair with anything from sea and anything with great richness or fat or on its own as an absolutely eclectic aperitif! The only downside of Pied à Terre is that this is still a work in progress when it comes to production. Just a few dozen cases made it to the East Coast this year, do not miss one of the most exciting American wines we will offer all year.
Year in, year out Château Turcaud produces one of the best white wine values in the world. It’s long been found on Michelin-starred wine lists in Paris and we’ve had it at the restaurant since Day 1. If you’ve ever tried this stunning, classic Bordeaux of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadlle, then you know why. The 2019 has just arrived, and it’s as fresh and as delicious as you could want. Enjoy.
