You’ve probably heard me talk about Marjorie and Stephane before. Nearly 20 years ago, they took a chance on an ancient vineyard in Languedoc-Roussillon – abandoned because it was nearly impossible to farm with any modern equipment.
The decision maybe didn’t seem to make much sense at first but the wines were absolutely stunning and eventually the sommelier set in Paris caught on to Roc Des Anges. These days, the wines are found at some of the top Michelin-starred restaurants on both sides of the pond.
The 2019 Effet Papillon Rose is made 100% from Grenache (as many of the best Southern French Roses are). Pale salmon in color, it boasts aromas of bright red fruits, orange rinds and a hint of lemon zest. It’s incredibly smooth and dry, making it a great food wine– but this Rose is serious with depth and complexity, making it worthy of enjoying on its own.

There’s so much to love about this wine – it’s food-friendly, intricate cool climate Chardonnay with bright citrus notes, mixed with some gorgeous minerality. Then there’s also the price tag which is simply unbeatable. It’s very easy to see why it’s so popular. The new 2021 release is just as good as its predecessor and it’s so fresh with pristine fruit. I expect it will be in line for another hit parade of big scores, but there’s just no way we can wait that long.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
Crated from the wonderful estate just outside of Florence in Tuscany, Corzano e Paterno once again churned out an incredibly special and delicate Rosato of Sangiovese. This is easy sippin’, harmonious, food friendly Rose that has the backbone to stand up to fresh pizza. The Rosato is a seriously sophisticated blend that offers more savory than sweet notes. It’s an absolute treat to drink now and will continue to drink well for a few years at least.
From the famous family behind Peyrassol, comes a new Cotes du Provence smash hit. The wine is pale pink in color with notes of small wild berries on the nose complemented by a hint of juniper. This spiciness lends weight to the liveliness on the palate reminiscent of exotic citrus fruits, creating a crisp, harmonious and refreshing ensemble. Spice lingers on the palate for a full and round finish.
