Domaine du Couvent Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux 2017

This comes from the coolest part of the vineyard, where the grapes are last to ripen – and that’s exactly what gives us this incredibly deep yet pure expression. Here’s the fascinating part: decades ago, you couldn’t even ripen Pinot Noir here – it was simply too cold. But with today’s climate, this once-marginal site has become an absolute sweet spot for producing some of the most profound Pinot Noir in the world.

At seven years old, the 2017 release is just hitting its stride with a sophisticated nose of juicy dark cherry fruit, cassis, and subtle violet aromas that are textbook markers for world-class Vosne. The fruit is layered in the mid-palate, with a silky-smooth texture and mile-long, stony finish.

Let me tell you about the incredible father-son team behind this gem. Philippe Chéron, after leading Domaine Misset-Chéron in Vougeot for over a decade, is now writing an exciting new chapter in his family’s deep Côte de Nuits history. He’s just merged with former Domaine des Varoilles in Gevrey – another piece of the Chéron family legacy.

But what’s really exciting is watching his son Paul (pictured above) come into his own. This young gun studied agronomy and enology in Beaune, then cut his teeth at two of the absolute best – Domaines Ghislaine Barthod and Louis Boillot in Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny. (A huge thanks to both domains for introducing me to this wine.)
