This one comes from Casa San Matía a distillery with over 130 years of history operating in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. They have long been a serious player, known for their uncompromising approach to crafting the best tequila. They’re lead by Carmen Villarreal who has has worked closely with the expert craftswomen and men of Casa San Matías for decades, honoring traditions while also spending big bucks in order to make the excellent Corazón tequilas that they do.
Crazy enough, this one actually comes from a barrel I picked out in 2020. It actually fell off my radar after months and months of not receiving it – I guess I just assumed it was a casualty of the pandemic and would eventually be worked out.
Unbeknownst to me, in it rolled last week – my own numbered single barrel – bottled and labeled with the crisp Nicholas Reserve name over the super rare green Reposado label. I’m not even sure they’re making this anymore, but if they are – I promise the price is nowhere near the deal I locked into pre-pandemic. Talk about timing too – right in time for cinco de mayo and spring. This is the perfect Tequila to drink by itself neat, on the rocks or even part of a cocktail, as it’s totally delicious but also available at a super juice price.

Like all of my single barrels, please don’t confuse this with the “regular” bottling. This is nothing like it in terms of depth of flavor and overall quality.

Bulleit isn’t usually one to come out with too many new or limited releases, but the ‘Frontier’ Limited Release bucks that trend. This American Single Malt was made with 100% malted barley, aged in new American spiced oak casks, and bottled at 43% alcohol. It hits with notes of freshly baked pumpernickel bread, candied orange, dried fruits, and maple syrup. She’s a beauty – just wish I had more to sell!
Stephan Steinmetz is a star in the Mosel wine region. His old vines are rooted in Kimmeridgian limestone, the exact same vein of rock that winds its way from Sancerre through Chablis and Champagne to its final out-cropping here in the Obermosel. His Elbling is glorious — both completely unlike anything I’ve ever had and also eerily familiar. The color is almost clear, some might call it silver. A stunning nose of green apples and lemon peel gives way to fresh pear and bright citrus fruits on the palate. It’s a stunningly focused wine with a healthy dose of minerality and acid zip, not unlike great Sancerre/Chablis and bone dry.

“Rich layers of spiced fruit aromas reveal themselves in waves; cinnamon baked plums, caramelized apple tart, and floral undertones. Concentrated flavors of mixed baking spices, peach skin, fresh tobacco, and brown sugar are luscious and ever evolving through the suede texture. A pleasure to sip.”
This is my third private barrel of Bourbon that I sourced from Bulleit and my first since 2022. Believe you me, they give you a ton (and I mean a ton) of samples to go through to make up for lost time. The winning combo is something people are going to love. Allow me to introduce you to Barrel #5-B3-82. It’s smooth and layered, with a full creamy mouthfeel and manages to sneak in at 104 Proof. On the nose, I get fresh cut oak, vanilla and brown butter. On the palate, freshly baked banana bread, burnt orange and graham cracker.
