Conti Costanti ‘Vermiglio’ Rosso di Montalcino 2019

Vinous’ #2 Ranked Rosso di Montalcino of the 2019 Vintage

95 Points, Wine Enthusiast – 94 Points, Vinous

This is the Riserva version of the Rosso di Montalcino which is a fantastic bottle in its own right, but doesn’t quite come close to this. This is better than most people’s Brunello di Montalcino bottlings. In vintages like 2019, it’s a runaway success. Vinous called it “a bombshell beauty” and made it their 2nd highest rated Rosso di Montalcino of the vintage behind Poggio di Sotto’s $100 bottling. Just read the following review and don’t tell me you don’t need a few bottles:

“It embodies, without a doubt, the term “Baby Brunello.” The Vermiglio hasn’t been produced since 2013, it’s a barrel selection of Rosso that Costanti matures for two years, instead of one, in cask. Only 4,000 bottles were made.” -Vinous

Original price was: $75.00.Current price is: $30.00.

95 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Showing more depth than the straight Rosso and released a year later, the engaging Vermiglio from Costanti opens with lovely aromas of pine forest, underbrush, crushed rose, spice and new leather. Elegant and energized, the savory palate offers succulent Morello cherry, star anise, crushed mint and hints of almond liqueur alongside fresh acidity. Aged partly in tonneaux and partly in Slavonian casks, it has tightly woven, fine-grained tannins that provide seamless support. Like all the firm’s wines, it boasts the Costanti signature finesse.

94 Points, Vinous
The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino Vermiglio is a bombshell beauty, with a bright bouquet of dried strawberries, crushed rose petals, shaved cedar, cinnamon spice and sweet smoke. It’s deeply textural, almost fleshy in feel, yet kept in line by vibrant acidity, as masses of black cherry and raspberry fruit envelope the palate. This totally harmonious Rosso finishes with a classic tug of fine tannins, along with nuances of sour citrus, inner earth and lavender tones. It embodies, without a doubt, the term “Baby Brunello.” The Vermiglio hasn’t been produced since 2013, it’s a barrel selection of Rosso that Costanti matures for two years, instead of one, in cask. Only 4,000 bottles were produced.

The Costanti family is one of the oldest noble lineages in Montalcino, with roots tracing back to the 16th century. Their estate, Colle al Matrichese, is situated in an ideal location just outside the town of Montalcino. While the family has been producing wine for centuries, it was only under the leadership of the late Emilio Costanti and his nephew, Andrea Costanti, that the estate reached its modern pinnacle of global acclaim. Andrea is the visionary.

Andrea Costanti is known for a winemaking philosophy that respects tradition while embracing modern precision. The man is a total magician in the vineyards. His wines are often described as “aristocratic”—they are not bombastic or overly oaked, but rather poised and intellectually engaging. His wines are one of the benchmarks by which others are judged.
