Conti Costanti Rosso di Montalcino 2019

*Nicholas Wines End-of-Vintage Exclusive*

93 Points, Vinous – 92 Points, Wine Enthusiast

This producer seems to be the standard against which most other Montalcino wines get judged. The 2019 vintage in Tuscany was something truly special, and unsurprisingly Conti Costanti absolutely nailed it. Only 10,000 bottles were even made of the 2019 Rosso – about half of what they bottled in 2018. All that did was dial up the quality a couple notches.

Vinous gave this 93 points, calling it “deep” and “full of character”, with a “seductive bouquet of black raspberry preserves complemented by nuances of clove, allspice and candied ginger.” Wine Enthusiast came in with 92 points of their own calling this baby “elegantly structured.” No one on the planet comes close to our price!

93 Points, Vinous
The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino is deep, primary and full of character. Here I’m finding a seductive bouquet of black raspberry preserves complemented by nuances of clove, allspice and candied ginger. Its textures are silky and pliant, displaying much more weight than you’d expect from a Rosso, which is balanced by a core of bright acidity. Rich red and hints of blue fruit prevail, lasting throughout the incredibly long and floral-tinged finale, where a coating of sweet tannin lingers. As good as this is today, it will be even better in another year and easily excel over short-term cellaring. There were only 10,000 bottles produced of the 2019, which is about half of what was bottled in 2018. Don’t miss it!

92 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Camphor, dark spice and ripe dark-skinned fruit aromas take the lead on this lovely red. Elegantly structured, the medium-bodied palate features Morello cherry, tobacco and coffee bean framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink through 2026.

The Costanti family is one of the oldest noble lineages in Montalcino, with roots tracing back to the 16th century. Their estate, Colle al Matrichese, is situated in an ideal location just outside the town of Montalcino. While the family has been producing wine for centuries, it was only under the leadership of the late Emilio Costanti and his nephew, Andrea Costanti, that the estate reached its modern pinnacle of global acclaim. Andrea is the visionary.

Andrea Costanti is known for a winemaking philosophy that respects tradition while embracing modern precision. The man is a total magician in the vineyards. His wines are often described as “aristocratic”—they are not bombastic or overly oaked, but rather poised and intellectually engaging. His wines are one of the benchmarks by which others are judged.
