Cline Rock Carved Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

93 Points, James Suckling

In the 2022 vintage, this Rock Carved Cabernet Sauvignon is as good as it’s ever been, with its largest score to date emphasizing that. James Suckling came in at 93 points, a great score for an under $50 Cabernet Sauvignon.

He praised its “charismatic and finessed aromatic profile of dark cherries, bergamot, tea leaves and chocolate,” noting its full body, delicate tannins, and bright acidity. But this wine is more than just a critic’s darling – it’s like a sensory adventure packed with a mix of jammy red and black fruit. There are notes of raspberry, blackberry, plum, and black currant, beautifully complemented by cedar, leather, and even a hint of mocha.

Original price was: $40.00.Current price is: $21.00.

The Cline Family is one of those ultimate wine-pioneering families that will forever be part of the fabric of the American wine scene. Fred and Nancy built a legacy based on deep-rooted respect for the land and for old things – co-founding the California Rhone Rangers movement of the 1990s and collecting the largest holdings of 100+-year-old vine vineyards in all of California.

But nothing in the Cline’s repertoire is as old and sacred as their Rock Carved Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a product of pre-historic times when giant rocks flew down a rampaging Russian River carving out the modern-day Alexander Valley.

All that rich sedimentary rock soil has created a hotbed for growing some of the most concentrated, interesting iterations of Cabernet Sauvignon. The Clines source the majority of the fruit from Rio Lago Vineyard, an extremely wet site by California standards and one that is cooled at night by the marine air moving from the Pacific Ocean. This helps grow Cabernet fruit with a wonderful acidic backbone that is both full-bodied and multi-layered.
