Château Olivier is one of only six estates in all of Bordeaux classified as Grand Cru Classé for both red and white wines. The château itself dates back to the 12th century—it was reportedly a hunting lodge for the Black Prince.

Their 2019 bottling earned unanimous praise with 95 points and a Cellar Selection from Wine Enthusiast, 94 from Suckling and double 93s from Vinous and Decanter. Wine Enthusiast called it “rich in tannins with a dense structure… full of juicy acidity.” This is smoke, gravel, and power. Classic Graves elegance with the structure to age for decades.

95 Points (Cellar Selection), Wine Enthusiast
The fortified chateau dating to the 12th century is now the home of the Bethmann family. This latest release indicates the high quality the estate now produces. Rich in tannins and with a dense structure, the wine is full of juicy acidity. The texture and dry core promise aging. Drink from 2026.

94 Points, James Suckling
Tobacco, blackcurrant and crushed stone. Ash, too. Full-bodied with very polished and juicy tannins that are firm, yet polished and long. Wonderful finish. Give it three or four years to come together. Try after 2025.

93 Points, Vinous
The 2019 Olivier is a dark, potent wine. Inky blue and black fruit, gravel, smoke, licorice, cured meat, graphite and savory herbs infuse the 2019 with striking aromatic intensity to play off its sumptuous fruit. There is a lot going on here. Very good.

93 Points, Decanter
Expressive nose of bright red cherries and strawberries. Good juiciness here, this has life for sure but the fruit is still a little in high definition right now and edged with spicy oak elements that are quite dominant. Definitely lots going on and this has power, precision, good fruit and acidity but needs more time to soften and integrate. A peppery, quite savoury finish. Drinking Window 2024 – 2039.

Château Olivier is one of the most historic and visually stunning estates in the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux. It holds a rare distinction in the 1953/1959 Graves Classification: it is one of only six estates classified as a Grand Cru Classé for both its red and white wines. Surrounded by a moat and ancient woods, the château itself dates back to the 12th century and reportedly served as a hunting lodge for the Black Prince.

The estate is gorgeous and sprawling, covering a massive 220 hectares, though only about 60 hectares are under vine. The vineyards are uniquely situated on an “island” of deep Garonne gravel over a limestone-marl base. In the last decade and a half, these wines have seen their quality rise several notches. These wines are fantastic.
