Chateau Noaillac Medoc 2018

94 Points, Decanter – 91 Points, Vinous – 91 Points, Wine Spectator

Chateau Noaillac’s 2018 may very well be their best to date in their 30+ years. It’s their highest rated they’ve ever received – 94 points from Decanter (for an under $20/btl). They’re also one of just 56 Châteaux holding Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. When critics tasted it blind, Neil Martin thought it was a Graves. Jeb Dunnuck thought it was classic Pauillac. When you’re fooling major critics into thinking they’re drinking wines costing 2-3 times as much, you know what you have! This juicy little number comes firing right out of the gates with Brilliant black currant and cherry fruit with blueberry, licorice, and cedar. Drinking beautifully right now. Ready for anything.

94 Points, Decanter
Ripe and heady on the nose, fully expressive and scented, it smells really seductive. Fine but very firm and dense tannins. Slately finish that’s long and cool-fruited.

91 Points, Vinous
The 2018 Noaillac has a very well-defined bouquet of blackberry, black tea/early Grey and light earthy scents, classy and gaining intensity with aeration. As I mentioned in my original review, there is something reminiscent of a Graves. Very well-balanced with a structured, fresh and lightly spiced finish that lingers. Excellent.

91 Points, Wine Spectator
Black cherry, dark cocoa, licorice and a touch of cacao get the wine going. On the palate, the wine is sweet, fresh and juicy with dark currants and black cherry that come through the finish. This is a nice value wine from the Medoc.

The vines at Château Noaillac are now quite mature. Much more so than most of their neighbors. It’s among a handful of very well-known and exciting Cru Bourgeois properties that are producing wines that punch far above their weight class and compete with the very best under $30 selections.

The winery is owned by Damien Pages. The same Pages that also owns Château La Tour de By. His chateau is located close to Gironde on the edge of a marsh – where not too long ago it was practically an island(!) before it was drained to make way for a vineyard. That extra moisture does wonders for the vines here, giving them a decided advantage over most of their Left Bank neighbors.
