Chateau Malartic-Lagraviere Pessac-Leognan Blanc 2023

98 Points, Wine Enthusiast – 97 Points, James Suckling – 95 Points, Decanter

“Green herbs, white flowers, floral scented with wet stones, limes and green apples on the nose. Lovely energy and vibrancy, forward and lively, but so well-balanced and harmonious. Oyster shell, salt, lemon and green lime skin. Scintillating, succulent and juicy in the best way. Just feels very welcoming with licks of stone on the finish. This has flesh and chew and power, but is hidden by the acidity and raciness. I love this because it’s calm and hands off, nothing too much or too little. Great stuff. One of my favorites!” -Decanter

With an intense citrus flavor, spiced with toast from wood aging, the wine has a tropical-fruit aroma. A majority of Sauvignon Blanc in the blend, gives the intense wine layers of citrus and pineapple, spice, apricot and peach flavors.

Wow. This is a really powerful white with aromas of sliced apples, pears, yellow fruit and oyster shells. It shows undertones of vanilla and pie crust as well. Full-bodied and layered, with excellend depth, power and intensity. Drink in three to four years.

Château Malartic-Lagravière is a super-highly recognized estate located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, celebrated for both their red and white wines. The château was elevated to the status of a Cru Classé de Graves in 1953, a testament to the exceptional quality of its terroir.

What makes this property so special is that the entire vineyard is situated on a single, continuous plot, ensuring uniformity in soil composition. The gravelly soil, rich in iron and other minerals, forces the vines to struggle, concentrating the flavors in the grapes and contributing to the wine’s depth and complexity.

It’s not just the vineyard where they get their advantage. In 1997, the Bonnie family constructed one of the first 100% gravity-fed cellars in Bordeaux. By eliminating pumps and moving grapes entirely by natural weight, they preserve fruit integrity and create incredibly supple tannins. This decision has proved pivotal, with the wines quickly earning an international reputation for their “velvety power.”
