95 Points, Decanter
“A touch of crème de cassis on the aromatics here, with slate, crayon, crushed rocks, cassis, blackberry, cocoa bean. More muscular and a little less charming than the 2015, at least for now, with a ton of ageing potential. This has character and concentration but needs longer in the bottle. Very Left Bank – the most typical Médoc of the vertical. 50% new oak for ageing, 50hl/h yield. Harvest 27 September to 20 October, Eric Boissenot consultant, Philippe Delfaut director.”

Château Kirwan is a highly-rated Third Growth from the 1855 Classification, that consistently makes some of Bordaeux’s best values. It is easily one of the intellectually fascinating estates in the Margaux appellation. Its history is deeply cosmopolitan, taking its name from Mark Kirwan, an Irishman who acquired the estate in the 18th century. For over a century, the estate has been under the meticulous stewardship of the Schÿler family, prominent Bordeaux négociants who have steered the property through a modern renaissance.

The estate is perfectly situated on the prestigious Cantenac plateau, where the soil is a complex mix of fine gravel and sandy clay, providing a unique “Margallais” elegance that is both aromatic and structurally sound. But what truly sets Kirwan apart from their peers is its obsessive focus on “micro-terroir” and technical transparency. This attention to detail pays off big time, especially as these wines begin to age and add complexities.
