Henri Martin was born into a family with a rich history in the Médoc region that had already spanned over 300 years before he was even born. Henri was a man of bold vision and deep roots in winemaking. His grandfather served as a cellar-master at Château Gruaud-Larose, and his father was a cooper from the village of Beychevelle, instilling in Henri a deep passion for wine and the land.
Driven by a desire to discover exceptional terroirs, Henri embarked on an ambitious project to create Château Gloria, a groundbreaking endeavor in Médoc. He astutely negotiated the purchase of parcels that were once part of Saint-Julien’s prestigious “cru classé” vineyards, building a legacy that would become synonymous with excellence. The name “Gloria” became synonymous with the reputation of Domaines Henri Martin, reflecting the family’s commitment to quality and innovation.
In 1981, Henri Martin further enriched his portfolio by acquiring Château Saint-Pierre, a classified 1855 Grand Cru estate in Beychevelle. This acquisition breathed new life into the estate, ensuring its continued prominence. Today, these properties, spanning over 100 hectares, are stewarded by Henri Martin’s daughter Françoise, her husband Jean-Louis Triaud, and their children Vanessa and Jean, along with their spouses Orphée and Caroline.
You know I’ve been on a mission since the start of the year to find us great Bordeaux deals. This one is simply a no-brainer for those looking to lock into a special one at a sensational price. It’s already drinking like a dream as well, even in its youth.
This one has a bajillion scores of 93 points or higher, and it honestly could have a bajillion more. There’s so much to like about this Cabernet dominant Bordeaux blend. Antonio Galloni of Vinous was almost speechless, he enjoyed this one so much. After a length review he summarized simply: “Extraordinary length. Serious.”

The 2019 Gloria has a compelling nose: black fruit, crushed rocks, tobacco and very subtle marine scents that are all beautifully combined. Perhaps the most precise and delineated nose among an impressive array of Saint-Julien’s this year. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively opening. A touch of soy infuses the black fruit; fine-boned with wonderful sapidity on the finish. Extraordinary length. Serious. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.
95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Showing beautifully, with the polished, pure, elegant style of the vintage, the 2019 Château Gloria sports a deeper ruby/purple color as well as great aromatics of cassis and assorted blue fruits to go with smoked tobacco, cedar pencil, damp earth, and floral notes. I love its purity, and it’s just a quintessential, medium to full-bodied, layered Saint-Julien that can be drunk today or cellared for a solid two decades. It should be a no-brainer purchase for the wine lovers out there. Best after 2022.
94 Points, Wine Spectator
Rock-solid, with a mouthwatering roasted apple wood and mesquite frame around a well-layered core of black currant, blackberry and plum fruit flavors. The finish features dots of tobacco and tar that add range but the real driver is a long bolt of iron, which gives this a throwback feel. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025.
94 Points, Decanter
Another winning velvety texture out of St Julien. You can trace the warmth and generosity of the vintage in the concentration and the ripeness of these blackberry and raspberry fruits but it is so seductive and carefully balanced with a core of freshness and a ton of crushed stone, black chocolate and baked earth adding layers and interest. This should be good value and is a definite buy. So much character and personality, right up there with the best vintages of this property. 40% new oak, 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend.
This is rich, powerful Cabernet, just jammed with black-cherry and blackberry fruit, tightly framed by firm tannins. This wine is structured to last but has a fruit quality to it that will make it hard not to drink this holiday season with any type of roasted meat.
As soon as you take the first sip on this one, you can easily see the Burgundian connection. Doglia’s Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato 2022 is medium bodied with scents of fresh cut lavender. On the palate, it’s an absolute delight, full of flavor but with an acid backbone that make it perfect to pair with almost any cuisine. Notes of wild fruits and a touch of pepper are just so good. This is a silky smooth, delicious bottle of wine.
2016 happens to be one of the highest rated ever (98pts, Wine Spectator) so it was no surprise that this year’s made the cut. The 2016 Riserva which was just released, is an intense version steeped in complex layers of flavor. It’s compact and well built with a touch of leather that compliments dark cherries, fresh licorice and a hint of cocoa all framed on a mineral backbone.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
