Cerbaia Brunello di Montalcino 2017

Categories , ,

Cerbaia is a tiny estate, just 12 acres. The vines were planted in the ‘70s on northeast facing parcels, rooted in the famous Montosoli calcareous soil. Elena Pellegrini’s time at the estate has just begun and in her second vintage, she has produced an elegant rendition of Brunello.

The high elevation and mineral soil produce naturally tiny, thick skinned berries, perfect for making concentrated, structured wine yet with an aromatic complexity and finesse of tannin that usually reserved for wines at a much greater price.

Original price was: $65.00.Current price is: $60.00.

93 Points, James Suckling
A firm and chewy wine with cherry and sandalwood character as well as hints of praline. It’s full-bodied and solid with attractive tannins that give the wine form and tension. Try after 2023.

93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The Cerbaia 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is silky and polished. There are small berry nuances on the bouquet with background notes of spice, tar and dried rose. These fragrant layers are delicate, light and softly intermingled. There is more power in terms of mouthfeel; however, and both the tannic impact of the wine and its freshness leave a lasting mark. That hot 2017 vintage punch definitely comes through at the end, so I recommend giving this bottle ample time to age and soften.

Buy enough to have some now and also to resist the urge. You’ll thank me.

93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – 93 Points, James Suckling

Drawn from some the finest parcels on the storied hill of Montosoli, home to some of the most famous and sought after wines. The 2017 Cerbaia is a sleek, full-bodied beauty that Parker’s Wine Advocate called, “silky and polished” while also mentioning its “power” and “freshness” in their 93-point review. Suckling echoed the sentiment with his own 93-point score, calling it, “full-bodied and solid with attractive tannins that give the wine form and tension.”
