Caymus Conundrum Red Blend 2021

Charlie Wagner’s vineyard sources and access to the best California grapes is second to none and he’ll be the first to tell you. For years, Charlie has enjoyed his pick of the liter in terms of California Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah to make whatever kind of Big Red he can dream up.

His 2021 Conundrum is a total show-stopper. It’s a big, brooding wine that’s fruit-forward and rich – a total crowd-pleaser. It leads with inviting aromas of ripe blueberries and blackberries, mingled with notes of cocoa and licorice. On the palate, it explodes with juicy dark fruits, while subtle smoky notes creep in towards the mid-palate and linger on the finish. Trust me, this is one of those mass-appeal kinds of wines – so fun to sniff, swirl, and drink, and it pairs beautifully with anything coming off the grill.

Chuck has been hunting Cabernet sources for over 50 vintages now and has a short list of extremely interesting and high quality vineyards that are a bit off the beaten pack. Here he sources all over the valley and takes the fruit through the Caymus winemaking machine – somehow, defying the odds with a big, bold Cabernet at a crazy good price.

Original price was: $25.00.Current price is: $15.00.

I’m not one for hyperbole, so I mean it when I say that the Wagner Family are the blending kings of wine. Their track record speaks for itself. Charles Wagner, the father of Chuck, started the first ballet hall-of-fame winery known as Caymus. Chuck built it into the empire it’s become today. But his sons, Joe and Charlie, hardly rested on their laurels – both choosing to follow in the family’s footsteps while still forging their own paths.

It’s hard to say who’s been more successful of the two – but you can bet it’s a heated sibling rivalry. Joe launched and then sold Meomi before taking over the Belle Glos project. Charlie built Mer Soleil into one of the most successful Chard brands in the country and then launched the Conundrum Red in 2011. And that’s how you earn the title of king.

Conundrum has become one of the Caymus Family’s greatest assets. Charlie has reveled at the chance to make something of his own each vintage. He says, “The beauty of going outside one growing region in California and venturing into others is that you have no rules when it comes to what you can blend.”
That may be true for everyone, but it’s especially true when your last name is Wagner!
