Castro Ventoso Bierzo Mencia Joven 2021

Categories , ,

If you haven’t heard of Spain, Bierzo, now may be the time to familiarize yourself. Big things are happening there and it’s my belief that it will soon be a household name the same way that Rioja is today.

The region is championed by Spain’s greatest wine figure, Raúl Pérez, who is nothing short of a visionary. The man knows the land like nobody else, and early on, tapped the high-altitude and ancient vines of Bierzo as a “sleeping giant” that will one day be huge.

Today’s wine itself comes from Raul’s nephew, César Márquez Pérez, who Wine Advocate just labeled, “among the finest producers in the region” who has “produced an amazing collection of wines ”. After tasting his lineup at his winery, Castro Ventoso last week, I can firmly say that I agree.

Original price was: $22.00.Current price is: $19.00.

…Lots of freshness and balance, possibly the finest vintage of this wine. Since 2020, they have been doing less pumping over (this is the only wine worked with pumps and the only one with temperature control), and this is made all from destemmed grapes fermented in stainless steel. This is one of the wines that transcends its price category, and it’s serious and balanced. It has very fine, elegant tannins. They harvested early, and the wine is complete, with great finesse and elegance, great balance and 13.3% alcohol. 2021 was a very rainy harvest, very long and not easy. Fine and elegant, much more serious than the 2020.
