Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino 2015

Categories , ,

Despite its remote location, Castiglion del Bosco was included as one of the 25 founding members of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino due in no small part to its lengthy reputation of creating wines of immense quality.

Even today with several hundred wineries perched on almost any plantable surface throughout the region – Castiglion del Bosco was listed as one of Decanter’s 10 Must-Know Estates in all of Montalcino.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino has a bevy of awards already – most notably its 97 point score from James Suckling. Crafted exclusively from select lots off of the estate’s Capanna Vineyard – the wine shows immense character, complexity, and superb structure.

A wonderful array of scents are available on the nose, from light floral, plum, through to freshly picked blackberry. It shows like a truly classic Brunello while having a certain character all it’s own. Little nuances that peak out; some say due to its unique vineyard positioning within a forest, the elevation, and the presence of Galestro rock.

97 Points, James Suckling

Wonderful aromas of flowers, plums, terracotta and white pepper. Intense, yet ever so subtle. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a long and intense finish. Shows excellent length. Drink after 2021.

94 Points, Wine Advocate

Castiglion del Bosco is the Montalcino estate owned by Massimo Ferragamo of the Ferragamo shoe and fashion dynasty. This pretty wine shows precision and focus with a rich, fruit-forward style. The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a shapely Tuscan red with the softness and velvety intensity to pair with a winter meat dish by an open fireplace. The wine glides smoothly over the palate, imparting aromas of black cherry, dried blackberry, plum, toasted spice and crushed flower. This harvest, which came about a week earlier than expected, resulted in a measured and carefully balanced Sangiovese from a generous vintage.

94 Points, Vinous

Good deep red. Complex aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, graphite, mocha, and mint. Focused and suave with very attractive sweetness and standout purity to its flavors of red berries and candied flowers. Finishes with polished tannins and outstanding length.

97 Points, James Suckling – 94 Points, Robert Parker – 94 Points, Vinous

A very special Italian Collectors item. 2015 was an enormous gift for any winery with a Tuscan address. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated the vintage a shocking 97 points. Ian D’Agata – arguably the foremost expert on Italian wine has gushed, calling the 2015s “the best in recent memory.” But maybe Mr. James Suckling said it most succinctly, exclaiming “The 2015 vintage is a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss.”
