Casanova di Neri White Label Brunello di Montalcino 2020

96 Points, The Wine Independent – 95 Points, James Suckling – 95 Points, International Wine Review – 94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 94 Points, Wine Spectator – 94 Points, Vinous

Casanova di Neri’s legendary Cerretalto vineyard – the source of their $400 flagship Brunello di Montalcino – didn’t produce a dedicated bottling in 2020. Instead, many of those precious grapes from the reddish mineral-rich soils were redirected into this white label Brunello.

Surely that played a paramount role in this becoming the highest decorated entry-level Brunello di Montalcino of the entire 2020 vintage, a 96, 95, 95, 94, 94, 94-point masterpiece that critics unanimously call spicier and more powerful than any in recent memory. This is a gorgeous, age-worthy Brunello from one of Montalcino’s most consistently highly decorated producers, offering savvy collectors the chance to lock into something exceptional for an absolute steal compared to its flagship sibling.

Original price was: $85.00.Current price is: $70.00.

96 Points, The Wine Independent
The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino has an intruiguingly espressive nose of cured olives, white pepper, rhubarb, and raspberry coulis. The tannins are firm and grippy, framing the lively acidity. There is an impressive power to the finish, with black cherry and smoked meats lingering. This is deeper in color than many of the 2020 Brunellos.

95 Points, International Wine Review
The 2020 Brunello is a wonderful showing in this vintage. It begins with inviting aromas of cherries and red berries, interwoven with notes of tobacco, herbs, exotic spices, wildflowers, pepper and subtle mineral undertones. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, impeccably structured, and shows impressive depth and precision. The wine flows with remarkable balance and finesse, carrying through to a long, elegant finish that lingers with poise. While already exceptional, the 2020 will benefit from additional time in the cellar, this is a Brunello with a brilliant future ahead.

95 Points, James Suckling
Really delicious fruit with cherry and berry character, as well as a hint of cedar. Creamy tannins and fresh acidity. Grapes from the Cerretalto vineyard are used here this year. Drink or hold

94 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The Casanova di Neri 2020 Brunello di Montalcino (with the white label) represents a departure from the norm. Because the Cerretalto was not produced, fruit from that vineyard with its reddish mineral-rich soils was directed here instead. For that reason, this wine is especially spicy, lifted and intense. Dark cherry fruit is followed by rusty nail, black pepper and milled spice. The wine is fermented in steel tanks, sees 20 days of skin maceration and ages in botte and tonneaux for over three years. The oak is very well integrated. This is a wine of character.

94 Points, Wine Spectator
Exhibiting cherry, raspberry, eucalyptus, iron and spice aromas and flavors, this supple red is complex and compelling. Supported by a swath of dusty tannins, yet everything feels in the right place. Excellent length. Best from 2027 through 2042.

In the early 1970’s the Neri Family struck gold when they were able to lock into an abandoned estate in the Northeast corner of Montalcino. They named it Casanova di Neri and together Giacomo and his two sons Giovanni and Gianlorenzo have managed their six vineyards spanning 75 hectares as well as they manage the cellar.

They’ve managed to do quite well for themselves too. Every year for the past decade plus, Casanova di Neri is amongst the highest rated wineries in all of Montalcino, consistently outperforming many of the bigger names. But those who know, know. You’re not going to find much better than Neri.

Their black label is a consistent 98+ point fetcher, especially in great vintages like the 2015 vintage and as you might expect, the pricetag starts at $125/bottle.

But for my money – the best overall offering from the estate is their ‘White Label’ — a beauty sculpted off a Southeastern sloped vineyard between 350-500 meters and very close to the cellar. As such, the grapes are brought immediately in and into large used oak barrels. There they take a 42-45 month slumber, building elegance to match the immense power and concentration and the bones required for aging.
