This year, the Eastside Cuvee hails from a primo vineyard just off the Silverado Trail– perfectly positioned next to neighbors Caymus and Frog’s Leap and just down the road, Quintessa. Amongst the elite, Carl Roy’s team locked into some incredible fruit, with gorgeous blackberry jammy opulence, firm grippy tannins and that signature Rutherford earthiness to the finish that many try to emulate but can only be reproduced off the special soil from which this elegant Cab was created.
Amongst a sea of giants is where Carl Roy is most comfortable. It was like that all those years ago at Jean Georges in a crowded list of Napa’s Elites. While all of Carl Roy’s neighbors this year will fetch $90-$100 bottle easily for their Cabernet bottlings– this one will once again stick out like a sore thumb.

Chad’s 2020 McKinley Springs Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is drop dead gorgeous. Those of you who were lucky to catch our sneak preview when we put it in our Gobbler Case can attest. Dark purple to the rim with aromas of black fruits, violets, creme de cassis and a hint of spice. On the palate, full-bodied, round and juicy with elegance and the gorgeous, pure fruit– red and black currants, blackberries and a touch of sweet tobacco.
91 Points, Wine Spectator (#64 Wine of the Year, 2022 Top 100)
A perfect Tuesday night wine that delivers an insane value every year, but thanks to a top 100 appearance in a great vintage, it becomes a must-have. It’s both juicy and fine loaded with aromas and flavors of red flowers, berries and anise. This is one of those incredibly food friendly wines coming out of the Rhone that seems like striking gold to stumble upon. An old vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted at some of the highest points in the Rhône, this is a gift that gives every vintage but this year, it’s really a treat.
95 Points, Decanter
On the nose, herbs and lavender dominate, as notes of meat stew swish in the background. As it continues to open up, various black fruits continue to emerge. The palate is marked by bright acids (perfect for fatty cuisine), black cherry and touch of leather. This is a perfect candidate for the cellar and will be a stellar pull over the next decade.
97 Points (Best in Show), 2022 Decanter Wine Awards
Once again, Decanter hosted the biggest international wine awards show. There are bronze medals, silver, gold and then platinum. Lastly, the true creme de la creme are awarded Best in Show, and that is where you’ll find the stellar 2019 Trefethen Estate Grown Napa Valley Cabernet from the beloved Oak Knoll district. The wine is an absolute show stopper– dark and brooding with aromas of violets, black fruits and figs with notes of black cherry, raspberry, plum and chocolate mousse on the palate. At today’s price, it’s one of the best deals in all of Napa.
