Capanna Brunello di Montalcino 2018

Patrizio Cenioni’s mind for wine is on another level. I know from the several conversations we’ve had on the topic.

He has consistently wowed me every time I’ve stopped by his gorgeous estate to sink my teeth into his Brunellos, Riservas, and Rosso di Montalcinos. Every bottle he pulls out is like a symphony, with every note of music carefully pieced together.

Patrizio is a slim guy who is probably now in his early 70s, but hasn’t slowed down for a second. He has a gorgeous sprawling property located north of Montalcino in the area of Montosoli, widely considered the home to some of the very best crus of Brunello.

His newest display of sheer class comes from the 2018 vintage. It’s an exceptional bottle of Sangiovese. The critics rightfully went nuts for it, with Vinous and James Suckling dolling out 93s, Jeb Dunnuck giving it a 94, and the Italian wine critic Luca Maroni giving it a thunderous 98-point review, calling this a “historic and glorious winery, that keeps faithful to its interpretations of classic and juicy Brunello.”

Original price was: $80.00.Current price is: $60.00.

98 Points, Luca Maroni
Northeastern side of Montalcino, a historic and glorious winery, that keeps faithful to its interpretations of classic and juicy Brunello. Nose of blueberry, with touches of eucalyptus, orange peel and rhubarb. The mouthfeel is dense-sapid, crisp, with fruity-citrusy return.

94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
The 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino is ripe with cherry leather, a bit of umami with dried shitake, and licorice candy. It is medium-framed but has elegant concentration, with wild strawberry, fresh herbs, and lavender. It is a very attractive wine to drink 2024-2036.

98 Points, Luca Maroni – 94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
