Greg Brewer started off as a French instructor at UC Santa Barbara before being trained in wine production at Santa Barbara Winery starting in 1991. He created his eponymous label, Brewer-Clifton with original partner Steve Clifton in 1996 and was also the winemaker at Melville from its inception in 1997 through the end of 2015.
Greg Brewer’s primary focus in the winery is the pursuit of refinement. He is actively involved in every aspect of his work, from vineyard to market, and every level of the process is given equal priority and appreciation. The goal is the beauty and synchronicity of the system. The result is wine that is honest and driven, expressive of the place and the team who collectively steward them.
Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton met in 1995 while they were working on a committee for the Santa Barbara Vintners’ Association. At the time both held production jobs at Sunstone and Beckmen, respectively, and forged an immediate friendship that would ultimately germinate in the creation of Brewer-Clifton just one year later.
In the December 2001 Wine Advocate, Robert Parker Jr. wrote in his year-end summary that “The wines of Brewer-Clifton were the single greatest revelation of all of [his] 2001 tastings.” Greg was not initially aware of this until he looked at his cell phone and realized he had fifty new voicemails by 6:00 am and his voicemail box was completely full.
Since then, nothing has slowed down for Greg Brewer or Brewer-Clifton. Now recognized for making some of the very best expression of Pinot and Chardonnay in the country, Greg won Wine Enthusiast’s 2020 Winemaker of the Year award, an award that probably should have come sooner given his 30 years of absolutely crushing it in the Sta. Rita Hills. The 3D Chardonnay represents his flagship bottling. In the 2021 vintage, it’s as good as its ever been… it’s a ridiculously special wine.

“Another utterly brilliant Chardonnay, the 2021 Chardonnay 3D comes from a site in the Sta. Rita Hills. It has a balanced, full-bodied, incredibly layered style as well as classic notes of honeyed citrus, stone fruits, crushed stone, and white flowers, with classic Sta. Rita Hills marine-like salinity and oyster shell-like nuances. A powerful, concentrated effort, it has flawless balance, beautiful freshness, and a great finish. It’s one of the finest Chardonnays in this report. Hats off to Greg Brewer for continuing to set his own path and make richly textured, powerful, world class Chardonnay.”
The Bernard Reverdy Sancerre Blanc 2022 is tightly wound, opening slowly with a complex nose of citrus, chalk and white flowers. With air, higher tones emerge, with a great mingling of ripe fruit, and stony minerality. Medium-bodied, fresh and focused on the palate, with concise limestone-drive acidity, this is an elegant, lively, and energetic Sancerre that mirrors the warm vintage but also the old vines rooting deep in stony soils. What a great persistent finish filled with tension, this is a classic Sancerre that goes best with shellfish, freshly caught fish and or some goat cheeses.
This wine is a vibrant and incredibly fresh new release with notes of green apple, lemongrass, and some quince with a stony finish that speaks to the special limestone gracing the hillsides of Bué. It is the quintessential Sancerre and matches most any kind of food you want to dream up in your kitchen (but I can’t think of a better treat than a buttery Maine lobster roll!)
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
A wine that is both aromatic and silky, lively and fresh! This very accessible white is an excellent introduction to the Peyrassol style. With its elegant fruitiness, its light style, it is thirst-quenching and accompanies all the good times of summer.
