Borgo Conventi Pinot Grigio Collio 2021

90 Points (Best Buy), Wine Enthusiast – 90 Points, James Suckling

Borgo Conventi’s Pinot Grigio is gorgeous, and it’s not surprising if you know the winery. They’ve been a major player in the Collio region since the mid-1970s and have had the same winemaker, Paolo Corso, since 1989.  His relentless work in the vineyard has translated into some of the most interesting, high-toned white wine treats that I’ve had from Collio.

His 2021 Pinot Grigio Collio DOC is flat-out delicious. It’s got spice, it’s got depth yet it’s light and fresh – it’s really a chameleon wine that can be whatever you want it to be. I’m not so sure this one even needs food. It just dances out of the glass, especially on a hot, sunny day. I’d go for it slightly chilled in a tall, white wine glass, and just sit back and enjoy the show.

The two wine publications that tried it both loved it – with James Suckling giving it 90 points, loving the palate which he called “compact, ripe and lightly spicy”. Wine Enthusiast even included their coveted ‘Best Buy’ designate along with their own rave review.

Original price was: $24.00.Current price is: $19.99.

Honeydew, Bosc pear and Golden Delicious apple aromas lift out of a glass of this delightful Pinot Grigio. On the palate, the wine shows the minerality of Collio region and the more savory sides of the varietal. Medium in body, it has a bright and sumptuous finish.

Buttercups, apricots, apples and some honey on the nose. Some spice and licorice, too. Medium-to full-bodied with a compact, ripe palate. Lightly spicy.

Influenced by the Alps to the north, the Adriatic Sea to the south and the Friulian Plain in between – Collio is treated to a riches of different influences, gaining salinity from the ocean, minerality from the unique soil and a gorgeous natural acid backbone from the slow-maturing grapes that are kept cool in the summer by the nearby Alps.

Borgo Conventi is a major player in the region since the mid-1970s. They’ve had the same winemaker, Paolo Corso, since 1989 whose relentless work in the vineyard has translated into some of the most interesting, high-toned treats in all of Collio.
