With 399 acres of vineyards situated in the best Grands Crus and Premiers Crus villages, Bollinger relies on its own estate for nearly two-thirds of its grape requirements, including the Pinot Noir that gives its Champagne its distinctive roundness and elegance. Bollinger is one of a select few houses that can control the quality of its grape supply so carefully.
Bollinger is renowned for its stringent quality standards. It adheres to traditional methods, including individual vinification of each marc and cru, barrel fermentation (it is the last Champagne house to employ a full-time cooper) and extra-aging on the lees prior to disgorgement.
The AYC18 is one of the estate’s newest calling cards and this latest release is outstanding. This one comes from 100% Pinot Noir, predominantly from Aÿ, with support from the villages of Tauxières and Verzenay

The fourth edition of Bollinger’s limited PN series is the most expressive yet, with a hugely satisfying, expansive character. Dried pear, stewed Bramley apple and nectarine melt into the depths of reserve wine complexity, with chestnut honey and perfectly pitched savoury interest. It’s surprisingly silky, the texture surprisingly weightless, the shape rounded and cushioned rather than strict or driving. A highly rewarding Champagne, ready to drink but with interesting potential to evolve over the next five years. 100% Pinot Noir, predominantly from Aÿ, with support from the villages of Tauxières and Verzenay. Based on the 2018 vintage, with 50% reserve wines back to 2009.

The former assistant winemaker and apprentice for Helen Turley at Marcassin, Matt Courtney left to start something special at Arista in 2013 and is well on his way. The winery has expanded, their waitlist for bottle allocations now stands at 20+ months (!) and every critic in America raves about these wines. This appellation Pinot Noir is a particular treat in 2019, a benchmark in silky smooth, layered and concentrated Pinot Noir that has both grip and grace.

That ‘Top 100’ tally may very well be going up after the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir hit the market. It’s simply outstanding and every single critic who has gotten their hands on this wine has gone completely gaga for it. Wine Spectator included them in their ‘Top 8 Pinot Noirs From Oregon Under $35’ piece a few weeks ago. Wine Enthusiast gave it a 91 and called it “fresh and fragrant”. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate took it a point higher and called it, “light on its feet with generous, floral fruit”.

Since the late 1990’s Penner-Ash has been viewed as one of Oregon’s top wineries making gorgeous wines in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. In the 2021 vintage considered to be one of Oregon’s all-time great years, the 2021 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that Lynn crafted is gorgeous, a silky tightly woven number that mixes red and black fruits with some sage and baking spices and a savory finish. It’s got some nice weight to it and structure which suggests it’ll age well for the next 10-15 years though it’s already drinking beautifully in its youth.
