96 Points, Decanter
Beautiful 100% Tempranillo, oak-aged Rioja with great intensity, expression and harmony. Sourced from small, non-irrigated vineyard parcels at 500m-580m in San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Rioja Alta. The Destemmed fruit is fermented then transferred to a concrete tank for malolactic, then racked into used 225L French and American oak barrels to mature for 14 months. Full of appealing blueberry and gentle spice supported by smooth, velvety tannins, it’s an elegant wine with real poise that still offers satisfying concentration. The finish is moreish and invites further drinking.
Bodegas Ramirez de la Piscina Crianza 2021
96 Points, Decanter
I tasted this last week and it’s exactly what great Rioja can be when done right. Medium to full-bodied, supple and beautifully balanced with a hint of vanilla oak on the nose alongside macerated cherry and lovely leathery notes that give it real character and depth. This is the kind of wine that just works – with food, without food, on a Tuesday night or at a dinner party. It’s a total ‘Swiss Army knife’ kind of wine.
Decanter gave it a stunning 96 points, calling it “full of appealing blueberry and gentle spice supported by smooth, velvety tannins, an elegant wine with real poise that still offers satisfying concentration.” Jeb Dunnuck called it “a well-made, dry, easygoing wine from a great vintage.” And Wine Enthusiast labeled it a “succulent Tempranillo” and a “crowd-pleasing Rioja.”

MORE INFO
Ramirez de la Piscina is exactly the kind of producer you ahve look to in a vintage like this. A traditional, focused estate that does one thing and one thing only: 100% Tempranillo from their own vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Ábalos, planted at up to 2,000 feet above sea level in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. Limestone-rich calcareous clay soils, high altitude, no irrigation. This is old-school Rioja winemaking done with conviction and precision.
The 2021 vintage in Rioja is the best since the exceptional 2016 and if you know where to look, it offers some of the very best wine values in the world right now. Not only that, but in this fruit-forward, silky style, it is firmly in its drinking prime.
