Benanti Etna Rosso 2020

Categories , ,

At the end of the 1800’s, Giuseppe Benanti, grandfather of Dr. Giuseppe Benanti, began the production of wines on one of his father’s old farms on the slopes of Mount Etna. That’s how long the Benanti family has been a fixture in Sicilian wine. For the last 30 years, they’ve enjoyed a reputation as one of the absolute best in all of Sicily.

One thing that has contributed greatly to this estate’s progress over the years is their relentless pursuit of perfection. These guys never slow down. Over the past five years, they have added parcels in Rovittello (with vines in the Contrada Dafara Galluzzo) and in Milo (the Contrada Rinazzo). Last year, two new wines were launched: the Etna Rosato (made with 100% Nerello Mascalese) and the Etna Rosso Contrada Monte Serra.

Their Benanti Etna Rosso is still their calling card for me though. It is always such a gorgeous Etna Rosso and this year’s bottling is certainly no different. Italian wine expert Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media gushed, writing “This is a fantastic Etna Rosso and introduction to the house style.”

Original price was: $33.00.Current price is: $24.00.

A vivid blend of crushed cherries and strawberries offset by dusty and rose and spice wafts up from the 2020 Etna Rosso. This is round with a pretty inner sweetness and lifted textures, showcasing ripe red and blue fruits over a core of vibrant acidity. It lingers long yet is only lightly tannic, with a flourish of licorice that echoes on. This is a fantastic Etna Rosso and introduction to the house style.

Strawberries, black pepper and crushed rocks show on the nose of this wine, with hints of vanilla and mint. The palate offers flavors of strawberries, just-ripened cherries with snappy skin, and soil tinged with the saltiness of crushed rocks and also the metallic tang of iron. This wine also has firm tannins and bright acid.
