Anakota Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley 2022

94 Points, James Suckling – 92 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 92 Points, Vinous

This is an absolutely phenomenal Cabernet that is already drinking like a dream, but will probably only get better over the next 2-3 years. It’s a cuvee made from both Helena Dakota and Montana Vineyards from the iconic Anakota Winery and made to be enjoyed sooner than the mammoth single-vineyard bottlings. That means less oak, more pure fruit.

James Suckling gave it a rave 94-point review and called it “So pure, fruity and appealing due to the ripe, welcoming flavors and fine-grained texture that’s soothing on the palate.” Parker’s Wine Advocate joined in on the fun, writing that this Cab “bursts from the glass with pure aromas of cassis, violet, pencil shavings, garrigue and well-integrated new-oak spice.” This is a Half OFF special we’ll likely never be able to replicate. Enjoy it!

94 Points, James Suckling
So pure, fruity and appealing due to the ripe, welcoming flavors and fine-grained texture that’s soothing on the palate. Black cherries, blackberries, dried blueberries and dark chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied, rich in velvety tannins, leading to a lingering finish. Drink now or hold.

92 Points, Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley was blended with 9% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot and matured for 12 months in 25% new French oak. It bursts from the glass with pure aromas of cassis, violet, pencil shavings, garrigue and well-integrated new-oak spice. The full-bodied palate features concentrated, enveloping flavors. It’s framed by abundant, grainy tannins and juicy acidity and has a long, floral finish. It will benefit from some time in a decanter. 1,500 cases were made.

92 Points, Vinous
The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley delivers a potent, powerful array of creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, sage, cedar and crushed rocks, soaking into the palate with real confidence. The addition of 6% Petit Verdot can be felt in the wine’s chalky, upright structure. While approachable today, the 2022 will likely benefit from some time in the cellar.

Anakota is a project dedicated to the “purest expression of Cabernet Sauvignon” from legendary winemaker Pierre Seillan and the Jackson family. If you didn’t know, Pierre is the superstar winemaker behind the Sonoma cult winery Verite.

While their single-vineyard Helena Dakota and Helena Montana bottlings now go for $240/bottle each (gulp!) and regularly fetch 100-points, this highly-rated Knights Valley represents the estate’s acclaimed “second label”. It’s a very deliberate blend designed to offer a more immediate look at their mountain terroir without as much oak and age. It’s outrageously good right now and will probably only improve over the next few years.
